Bought this after I lost a small fish being pinned to the intake. I read the reviews saying it reduces the flow and thought that it wouldn't matter since I've upgraded my pump to a higher GPM Sicce model. But as soon as I put the guard on the water level in the back dropped and my ATO kicked on adding fresh water into the tank. Which as any salt water tank keeper knows, really sucked since I had just done a water change and the levels were perfect, and now I had to adjust everything all over! So does it work to keep the fish out, I guess but they could still be pinned to the guard. And your making your pump work even harder. So for me this did not work.

I do notice a bit of reduced flow with this in place but nothing that is causing me any problems. It's possible this could be an issue on smaller tanks.One of the two guards that came in the pack was warped and I'm pretty sure shrimp will still be able to get through it. Wasn't super happy about that especially given that this costs $20 for two pieces of molded plastic. On the other hand, it has prevented my smaller fish from swimming into the filter area, and it is a HUGE pain in the neck to catch them and get them out of that area.Overall I'd probably buy this again because it did fix my main problem which was my ember tetras escaping into the filter.

It does what it states and keeps small fish out of the filter section of my AIO tank.I bought this for my IM 20 tank. Sadly, the company should have included these with the tanks but it's an add on option.It will keep small fish, shrimp and snails out of the filter section but there are some drawbacks.It does reduce water flowIt does affect surface skimming of the tank, allowing a bio-film to build upI ended up taking my dremel tool to them and slightly increasing the openings in size but a little bit. This allowed for more water flow and better surface skimming.For the price, they're OK, they do keep small fish out of the filter section but they do have a few negatives as I mentioned.
