Very easy to install - works better than the original shifter.

These are a huge upgrade over the grip shifters you find on most kids bikes. These are easy to install; as other have mentioned, just shift into the smallest cog, remove the old shifter and cable, route the new cable and tighten. It may take a little adjustment, but i had both of my kids bikes shifters changed in under an hour. My only negative comment is that housing is a little oddly shaped, so it has to be mounted before the brake lever and ends up being a little far to reach. But that's a small price to pay for your little one being able to actually shift their gears. Remember you'll need longer grips too.

I replaced the grip shifter on my daughter’s Diamondback Tess 20 because it was incredibly hard to shift. I’m a fairly strong guy and it was difficult for me to shift it down. My 8 year old didn’t have a chance. I thought the derailer was the issue but some forums said they had luck with a lever shifter so for $15 I tried this one. I’m amazed at how well it works! Shifting down takes minimal effort pulling the lever and shifting up is a press of a button. My daughter loves it, its like a brand new bike for her.Install was simple, without instructions it took about 20mins.The steps were:1. Worked soapy water into the grip and slid it off.2. Loosened an allen screw on the grip shift.3. Loosened the nut that retained the cable on the derailer and pulled the cable out.4. Pulled the shift off and the cable out of the sheathes while noting how it was routed.5. Put the new shifter on the handlebar against the brake lever bracket and tightened the clamp screw.6. Unravelled the new cable and routed it just like the old one was. I used some dry lube in the sheathes that said it was ok for plastic. Not sure if this was needed or right.7. Routed the cable thru the derailer clamp.8. Made sure the bikes gear was in 6th (chain on the gear) set the shifter to 6, pulled the cable taut thru then derailer clamp and tightened the clamp screw. I expected more adjustments but all 6 speeds just worked. I did have it adjusted well for the grip shifter so I only expected to tweak the cable location in the clamp.9. Cut the excess cable with wire cutters and moved the crimp from the old cable to the new. I think I was lucky to get it off the old one, and just used a wire crimper to crimp on the new. I assume you can easily buy the crimps but cover it with something that will stay so it doesnt fray and stab.10. Got most of the soapy water off the grip and slid it back on. NOTE: The grip shifter was part of the grip, so the remaining grip is short. It works for now with her little hand but I need to buy a new set of grips.Quality wise this shifter seems well made. Time will tell but so far its more than I expected for $15.I hope this review helps someone find this same solution!

What a great shifter, push button for up shifts , thumb lever for down shift. 2 minutes to install, works very well.

This shifter works great on my fat tire bicycle. It has been a great replacement for the twist shifter that came on the bicycle from the store.
