Ida Lupino and Paul Henreid fall in love while Poland falls to the Nazis in this stirring wartime drama directed by Vincent Sherman and costarring silent-screen and stage legend Alla Nazimova. In March 1939, English tourist Jenny Whittredge (Lupino) travels to Warsaw to buy antiques and meets Stephan Orvid (Henreid), a Polish count she marries after a whirlwind courtship. Moving onto his family's farming estate, Jenny is looked down upon by Stephan's aristocratic sister (Nancy Coleman), uncle (Victor Francen) and mother (Nazimova), but succeeds in helping her husband modernize and make the harvests more profitable. Their happiness is short-lived, however, when Hitler invades and the couple must decide whether to defend the land or flee the German army.

Different countries different stations yet love at first site
Paul Henreid and Ida Lupini come from different countries and different stations but when they meet by chance at an antique shop, it's love at first site. He(the count) mistakes Ida as an employee of the antique shop and soon they are married and living in his beloved Poland. She opens his eyes on how to make his farmland functioning and making money and things look good right when the Nazis invade. A great little story with great performances by all

Superb, Classic Bette Davis Warner Brothers film, with Extra Features!
"In This Our Life"(WB)(1942) DVD is a "must", for any Bette Davis or classic film fan! Bette Davis and Olivia deHavilland, at their best -- with George Brent, Dennis Morgan, Charles Coburn, Hattie McDaniel, Billie Burke, and many others. A film, ahead of its time, dealing with racial discrimination and hints of incest between the Davis and Coburn characters ( he portrays her uncle). Wonderful "extras", on this DVD -- from a "Warners Night at the Movies" -- to cartoons and WWII newsreels -- and superb film historical commentary, for this John Huston-directed picture.A great Christmas gift!

From the heart
Good for the nostalgia if you remember the war or are a fan of Paul Henreid, an Austrian who escaped from the Nazis, so he was able to play this role from the heart.
