GYBR was my very first album purchase on 12/8/73
I was eleven years old when I purchased this, my first album. How do I remember? I wrote it along the album sleeve and still have the album. The imagery and tawdriness that the lyrics (always included) and album artwork evoked were very vivid and not lost on that 11 year old. A few short months later and I was glued to the TV watching Director Bryan Forbes' BBC documentary, "Elton John and Bernie Taupin Say Goodbye Norma Jean and Other Things" broadcast on ABC (Friday, 5/17/74 to be exact) which lent further insight into this pop star's life as his career was skyrocketing. While I always seemed to miss a rebroadcast either on VH1 or other networks, I was pleasantly surprised that some of the snippets included throughout were those I remembered from that documentary. One image in particular, the crocodile playing along with Elton during "Crocodile Rock," remains to this day.Imagine decades later not only getting to see parts of that documentary again but to hear everyone talk about the collaborative process. As many reviewers stated, this documentary is too short and not every song is discussed and/or dissected. And after seeing Gus Dudgeon's name on every 1970s-era album, it was a treat to (finally) see him and watch Gus and David Hentschel break down the production. What is included is a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes footage during the making of what ended up being a monumental album. It is amazing that there is archival footage of this entire process. I am a firm believer that the height of a band's career was when the bandmates were living, eating and sleeping under one roof and this is further proof. How else can you explain the entire creation of a two-record set in the span of two weeks? It was stunning to me to see the band eating breakfast communally and also how I, and many others, took their harmonizing for granted. Even as a die-hard EJ fan back in the day, it was entirely enjoyable to watch and appreciate once again the great collaboration that took place to produce this fine work.

A Must For Die-Hard Elton Fans!
I was a little apprehensive of purchasing this DVD, thinking that it might be some critic's assessment of an Elton album, done from a third-person approach. Boy, was I wrong. This is an in-depth look at the making of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", using vintage clips of Elton and band in the studio and newer interviews from the same to have them recollect their memories of the making of that album. From the new interviews, Elton plays little snippets of songs to show how they came together, and guitarist Davey Johnstone plays some of his guitar parts solo and does some analysis of them. Elton and lyricist Bernie Taupin describe their songwriting process. Many individual songs from GYBR are discussed. The aspect of this DVD I enjoyed the most was having the master tapes being played in the studio and having them dissected to our ears. The engineer will solo track the backing vocals to a particular song to show you exactly what was being done there....will pull only Nigel's drums up to spotlight them, etc. You see how a now-famous song came together. On top of this, we hear from many of those involved why this recording was a pinnacle in Elton's career, being more of a landmark than many of his other recordings. I LOVE this DVD!

This DVD adds 41 extra minutes of interviews to the main program
This title, one of many in the "Classic Albums" series, offers a main program running 49 minutes duration. In addition, it has a "bonus feature" of 41 extra minutes of interviews. (Not ALL of the "Classic Albums" DVDs have bonus material, but this one does).

Captain Fantastic !!!
This has always been on my list of favorites. I first listened to it on an 8-track player. This DVD is the next logical step. Music and images. Songs and videos. It is a Great Adventure, like all of Elton John's Art.

A Peek Inside A Great Mind
I first received the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album as a Christmas gift when I was 7 years old. It was love at first sound, an affair that's still going strong 34 years later. This Classic Albums DVD really delivers just about anything you would want to know about the story behind this great record in only about an hour. Of course, some may want more details (there are bonus features), but the DVD covers everything from archive footage to modern day interviews (within a few years' time), as well as more "technical" aspects. Elton John fans will not be disappointed! There isn't really much to say here. People who grew up with this double album, as well as fans of the Classic Albums series, will love this DVD!

This is a charm view for any Elton John fan. You must see it!
First off....Hear me.I couldn't have had the colorful, Romantic [ NB: a capital "R" ], creative youth I did have, had Goodbye Yellow Brick Road not happened in that summer of '73. I had got a summer job waiting tables at the famous lakeland resort in Muskoka, Ontario, the Muskoka Sands Inn. Well-off vacationers getting 1st class food service beside a beautiful lake known for its glorious sunshine.Staff lived in secluded dorms in the Cedar and pine woods. I had a dinky transistor radio. One day off, as I sat back on my single bed watching the pine trees swaying in the breeze from the lake, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" came crackling through. I was struck! Good god! I had just heard the Romantic poets of an age gone by open up and cry out to me something I, too fearedcmight happen to me: "Waiting tables is something to do. But please don't sideline me on the benches of Life; I have so much more to do with my talent."This DVD demystifys exactly how Elton John and his band - real people, like me! - pulled all their youthful hope, love of Life and a yellow brick road leading to...what?.....rock n roll super stardom, no doubt.....together in a dreamlike theme package to offer to the world. I was listening.... REALLY listening.... stunned by the poetic lyricism and romance of hopeful, colorful youth. In the interviews EJ makes it look so simple. First, a few fast prodigious poetic lines from Bernie, then a chord progression to suit the mood of the words..Voila! Another Elton John hit song!Maybe Life really could be a dream, afterall.Watching this absorbing collection of interviews and studio takes brings me right back to Muskoka Lake and sunshine and even a romantic dalliance of my own...This is a charm view for any Elton John fan. You must see it!
