The Nice House on the Lake 1

Fun marriage of the best aspects of both the 1963 classic “The Haunting” & the TV show “Lost”
Best New Series - The Nice House on the Lake, by James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno (DC Black Label)Best Writer- James Tynion IV, House of Slaughter, Something Is Killing the Children, Wynd (BOOM! Studios); The Nice House on the Lake, The Joker, Batman, DC Pride 2021 (DC); The Department of Truth (Image); Blue Book, Razorblades (Tiny Onion Studios)I’m not much of a horror fan (that being said), I gobbled this trade up in one sitting. Tynion is hot off winning both the Eisner and Ringo awards for Best Writer in 2021 and the critics haven’t forgotten him in 2022. “The Nice House on the Lake” is nominated for Best New Series and Tynion is once again up for Best Writer. Regardless of the other reviews, this book is a fun marriage of both the best aspects of the 1963 classic “The Haunting” and the TV show “Lost” (if that description doesn’t interest you then you’re closed off to this theme and wasting your time). The art is very complimentary to the project and adds a complexity that is both smart and engrossing. I found the ensemble interesting and relatable. Even if the payoff fails to deliver (like “Lost”) the ride will have been well worth it.

Not What I Expected
I went in to The Nice House on the Lake not knowing much about it. And it definitely didn't go the direction I was thinking. I don't read a lot of apocalyptic fiction; it's not really my cup of tea. However, I found myself completely engrossed in this story. My only real complaint is the ending, which didn't really make any sense. I know there's going to be a second volume, and I'm sure the ending here will be explained there, but I would have preferred something a little less topsy-turvy finishing out this volume. Maybe that's just me though. And I definitely look forward to (hopefully) getting some answers in the next one.

So good!
Nice House on the Lake is an absolutely astounding piece of fiction. If you’re a fan of thrillers, horror, mystery, or even a bit of 80’s pastiche, Nice House on the Lake has it all. While there are many similar works you could compare this series to, this story raises the stakes and puts all the others to shame.Honestly, often when I read comics I usually end up feeling bad for the artists because so much of the time the story/writing really wasn’t worth all the trouble. That’s not the case here. The art and writing in Nice House on the Lake go hand-in-hand. They work masterfully together; to the point where I feel that I have very little to criticize it on. At first, I had trouble figuring out all the characters because there is a somewhat large cast. However, you quickly get used to each of the character’s different voices and you can figure out who is talking solely by the text. I’m impressed that the writer was able to create so many distinct voices; that’s not an easy thing to do.Overall, I loved this story. I’m immediately buying any new issues as they release.

How do you think the world's going to end?
The set-up is perfect and the payoff is even better. Wonderfully written and entertaining. I wanted to spend more time with the interesting group of characters. The unique situations surrounding the house are out there. I suggest this if you're looking for an original spin on the cabin in the woods horror flicks and books.

Some next level story telling!
This book is absolutely amazing. The present narrative, flashback character development and mixed media materials … all combine perfectly to create a very captivating story. I also love the concept art and cover gallery bonus material that was added to this edition. I can’t wait to read the next arc of this!

Lost-ish
A group of thirty-somethings united by a common friend find themselves invited to a remote house to sit out the apocalypse. Lost-ish group drama that’s strong on WTF moments and on asking lots of questions. Told with its writer’s usual confidence: it’ll be fascinating to see where this is going. Issues 1-6 collected here.

Woke
Discovered a certain woke character (have to be careful what I write here) will not engage with the story any further.
