A Very Good Explanation of Erdogan’s Behaviour
It is always worthwhile to read up on another country’s political situation and military position in today’s world. This book is a good review of how Erdogan rose to power in Turkey and successfully turned the previously parliamentary style government into a one man show. It gives you an understanding of why the EU resists Turkey’s entry in the union and why many countries are uneasy with the the country’s leadership. There is almost too much detail in the book, but it is an accomplishment to push on and read it in its entirety. The last chapter brings it all together and should be read thoroughly.

Very concise
Being a Turkish national I found the author to be very concise about her description of recent Turkish history. She manages for the most part to not be the traditional Westerner with Orientalist prejudice, however , her depiction of Erdoğan and his steady climb into authoritarism sounds somewhat resentfull. The people.of the Middle East don't mind some authority as long as it aims to better the lives of its citizens . When compared with most hipocratic dictatorships in the Middle East , Erdoğan has managed to make Türkiye a power house of a nation that while pushing forward has managed to provide self-respect and identity for their own regional traditions without forcing the people to change like the elitist jacobens who used to rule the country by military influence. Türkiye is no longer a mere NATO outpost designed to protect Europe. The more Erdoğan aims independence the more he is hated by his opposers.

Excellent
Really enjoyed this. I visit Turkey frequently and so have seen many of the developments in this book first hand. A lively, engaging read, yet we'll researched and thought through.

Irreführender Titel
Der Titel ist irreführend. Treffender wäre "Stories from a Correspondent covering Syria and Turkey". Wenn man so ein Buch sucht, dann ist es durchaus lesenswert.

Standout in a Surprisingly Thin Field
It's surprising that more hasn't been written about developments over the last 20 years in Turkey, specifically, about Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The nation, with 85 million people, is the 17th largest economy in the world, and politically central in a highly divisive neighborhood. This book steps up to the plate: the author reported for the Times of London for many years, and has a deep knowledge and understanding of the country. She is balanced on a subject that tends to evoke strong passions one way or another, and she illustrates her story with vivid descriptions of interviews with ordinary Turks. Well worth reading.
