Jimi Hendrix: The Stories Behind the Songs

what might have been
This book gives you the inside story on every one of jimi hendrix songs. every original song on Are you experienced?, axis: bold as love, electric ladyland and band of gypsys plus all his hidden, unreleased or half finished songs. it gives detailed informaton on all his classics: foxy lady, purple haze, voodoo child, stone free, little wing and many more. By the end of the book you get the feeling that hendrix was only just starting and makes you think what might of been had he not died tragically early at twenty seven. He was doing things that no one else was at the time like overdubbing, backwards guitars and vocals, even with the limited technology in the sixties. Even todays bands are copying his techniques. Who knows how far he would of taken music and recording. If there was no hendrix there would be no slash, jimmy page or any other guitarist doing amazing solos because they were all influenced by hendrix and even admit to trying to mimic him. The fact is music would be a worse place without him and in my opinion still is.

Wonder why you wrote this book ?
I have been listening to Jimi since he came over to the UK, so I bought this book out of curiosity. It is interesting, no revelations, but I wish I had read the first edition, this edition is post Hendrix Legacy and seems to include the recent revelations from Jim'is brother Leon, was that in the first edition ?I am most puzzled by two places in which the whole era, well hippies any way , is spoken of like well this.........Page 55 "the festival, it managed not collapse into the sort of unmitigated shambles in which hippy idealism usually resulted."Page 57 " The sleeve, however, which parodies Hindu iconography,.......,is a piece of period hippy-dippy bilge,..."An interesting book but goodness knows what the author woulda thought of the people on the streets of Warminster in 1969, wearing their Loons, scoop necks, apache scarves, kaftans and afghans.

not essential - probably not necessary, either
I'm unconvinced that this book is particularly well researched. I almost feel I could have written it. Some of the facts seem to have been cobbled together from elsewhere. Some of the other stuff just didn't chime with all the other biographical material I've ploughed through. The background to individual tracks seems suspect but it didn't really matter as overall I felt the book failed the "so-what?" test. Although covering wider ground it was much less impressive than either Not Necessarily Stoned, But Beautiful: The Making of "Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced" (Jimi Hendrix - The Vinyl Frontier) or Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland (33 1/3)Not Necessarily Stoned, But Beautiful: The Making of "Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced" (Jimi Hendrix - The Vinyl Frontier)Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland (33 1/3)
