Truly a service to the History of Photography
This book is remarkable for the depth and breadth of research about those who have laid the groundwork for so many in the field of photography and the arts today. The thoughtful preface and introduction together with any one of the sections (arranged essentially in the themes of artistic experimentation, social documentary, commercial studio practice, photojournalism, ethnography, and the recording of sports, dance and fashion) would already stand as an informative contribution to this field. The sum of these different sections, informed by their global perspective, goes way beyond any other book of its type and subject.Everyone should understand what is here, both as a general reference and for so many recovered details on lives and contributions. More than a beautifully presented background to an exhibition, this book is new foundation in the field and an inspiration for its professionals. As Frank Crowninshield (best known as editor of Vanity Fair and later Vogue) predicted in the Forward to U.S Camera Annual in 1930, "It may be that women will lead our coming revolution for, already, many of them have shown amazing originality and depth of feeling." And now we see how right he was.
