5/5
I picked this up thinking it would be a nice read, and I was very happy with it. Skylar was so relatable and down to earth in some ways, not in others, but given the world she's in that's understandable. I adored the writing, the way the plot twisted and turned and you couldn't always see what was coming. It was a fast read for me, and I couldn't put it down. Overall, a fun, book that many would enjoy!

NOT just another Academy book
I've read a number of academy books and series and this book one is up among the best I have read for a while. I read this in one sitting and I can't wait to continue reading the rest of the series, just as long as I don't run out of books to read before the series ends, I recommend you start reading this series! Five for five.

(Not only) for fans of "Mages of New York" :)
This book is the first in a new spin-off series, so if you liked Mages of New York, and especially Aspen and Lucien, chances are good you will enjoy this tale of their respective offspring as much as I did.Especially in this first instalment of the series, Skylar reminds me so much of her mother Aspen, it's sometimes not even funny - except when it is. Asher seems to follow in his father's flashy footsteps into overachieverdom, but - unlike his dad - he isn't larger than life. Yet. We'll see what the rest of the series will bring. ;)Rounding out our new team of heroes are Mia, Skylar's best friend and understated bada$$, and Colson, who is so far my favorite of the four, not only because he seems to be a good guy, loyal and kind, and frankly the smartest of the bunch under fire.Add to that a mysterious, magical villain who is on a vendetta against Skylar's family, and all bets are off if the world as we know it will be in ruins (again) by the end of the series.TL;DR: This book provides an excellent setup for the series to come. Looking forward to reading the next book to find out how the story continues!

Well written, edited, and thought out book, with an annoying lead
Basic story: Harry Potter type school in NYC where magic is alongside but hidden from normals. The female lead just moved up from high school to college level and moved into a magic apartment with her best friend and the hot guy pair. Instead of dead her parents are always out of the country doing missions. Powerful force is hunting them and the adult leaders are clueless.Great writing style, great editing. The lead was completely annoying. She was supposed to be coming out of magic middle and high school into magic college, but knew nothing and had no ability to notice anything or think through anything. She was a 18-20 year old woman, she consistently acted like a 13 year old girl drinking massive amounts of jolt cola while hating everyone in between crushing on the cute guy. At no time did anyone in the hero group ask for help or cover or show the slightest but of common sense or precautions.
