Gripping and factual, this is an excellent re-imagining of the actual events in the far East which greatly affected the course of Chinese, French, Dutch and British Imperial history through seemingly trivial actions.Although there is not much naval action in this book, the machinations of John Company and the Admiralty keep the tension alight, then throw in a bit of love interest, nepotism and professional jealousy - a cracking read!The series gets better with each book, I rank this at least as good as O-Brien's Aubrey/Maturin series and arguably better n some aspects. Gets my *****

All of these books are well written and enjoy reading them. I have read them all.

The story faded towards the end. Hence the four stars.
