Collection is nice - you save on shipping
I figure you don't need me to review the movies themselves. You've already seen them anyway, right? You want to see them again because they're so good, right? Yes.So, just a quick point: this twofer is the cheapest way to do it because you only take one hit on the shipping cost, and of course VHS editions are essentially free now.

"I'm a cybernetic organism. Living tissue over a metal endoskeleton."
Writer/director James Cameron's original Terminator film has Arnold Schwarzenegger as a cyborg sent back in time to 1984. He's programmed to kill Sarah Connor before she can give birth to a son who is destined to lead survivors in a post-apocalyptic war against a self-aware computer network and its army of killing machines. In an example of the future affecting the past, John Connor, Sarah's adult son, dispatches a trusted aide named Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) to protect her from the nearly indestructible cyborg. Sarah bonds with Kyle in their mutual struggles. They make love and thus John is conceived.THE TERMINATOR was a huge summer hit, grossing $78 million worldwide in first run vs. a $6 million cost. Its sequel, TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY was long in coming, but well-worth the seven year wait. In almost every respect, this sci-fi thriller surpasses its predecessor. The concept of TWO terminators in the story equalling twice the film just may be true, thanks in large part to Robert Patrick's grimly determined T-1000 prototype, a superior poly-alloy mechanism capable of morphing into anybody (or thing?).Sarah (Linda Hamilton), who was understandably confused and terrified in the first movie is now confident, buff from working out, and ready for the coming conflagration. Her only obstacle is confinement in a prison-like psych ward. Arnold returns as Cyberdyne model 101, but this time his mission is to protect, not kill Sarah, and especially young John (Edward Furlong). Again, the unseen adult John is trying to make sure he lives in the pre-machine war past, and Arnold is his weapon and shield against a superior cyborg. The battle between the two terminators is epic and to the death, but first, Sarah must be freed. Both "Terminator" and "T2" are enhanced by brilliant Industrial Light & Magic special effects and the mechanical wizardry of Stan Winston. The pace of both is breathless, the sense of danger unflagging, and the action, mesmerizing. These are two great movies!.Parenthetical numbers preceding titles are 1 to 10 IMDb viewer poll ratings.(8.1) The Terminator (UK/USA-1984) - Arnold Schwarzenegger/Linda Hamilton/Michael Biehn/Paul Winfield/Rick Rossovich/Dick Miller/Bill Paxton(8.6) Terminator 2: Judgment Day (USA/France-1991) - Arnold Schwarzenegger/Linda Hamilton/Edward Furlong/Robert Patrick

Despite what the description says, the two videos in this set are NOT in widescreen. Keep this in mind when buying.

A must for any Terminator fans and decent prequel before entering "Sarah Connor Chronicles".
I'm forced to subtract a star for Rise of the Machine here... As the only Terminator movie with so sub-par special effects that it hurts. Yes, the CGi is almost as disturbing as the clunky stop-motion of the first. But this time it's everywhere! Salvation however brings back the practical effects to great uses.I would also like to precise that if you do want to make sense of the whole Terminator Franchise, these 2 movies should be seen before "Sarah Connor Chronicles", not after as many sites seems to imply. This is the future that was re-written by Cameron coming back and getting the Connors to the lesser-ish future in season 1.But aside from these technical considerations, how does these movies truly fare? Well, pretty good in fact. "Rise of the Machine" brings back that human element of doubt and alienation the first movie was so fond of. And while the overuse of stereotypes for the T-X and T-800 might not provoke the comical effect for which it was intended, this is mostly because of the misplaced sexism between robots. In the end, the doom of "Rise of the Machine" is that it's written like it doesn't know what to be... Is it a successor to the first, oh so serious, Terminator? Or a sequel to the pop-corn kid movie that was Judgment Day? From a car chase that destroys almost a whole town in most violent fashion to the military types straight out of a commercial Christmas movie, everything tries to be here... and it might, just might, be trying too hard. However, for all it's default, "Rise of the Machines" actually does one thing very well : A failed John Connor. This is after all a delinquent orphan raised by guerrilleros to save a world who does not care about him. His true success is measured by the point he will not be needed and thus is obsolete before even having truly lived. The only measure of happiness he can have is a machine telling him who to marry and bed before he'll abandon her. All so mechanical. The point of this tragedy being so clear while the movie tries so hard to be an up-beat action flick is probably why it bombed so hard.Salvation is another beast entirely. I remember the first shot I saw of the Terminator Future when I was a kid... This is the movie I wanted to see. This is why I would think anyone would bother to make such a franchise. And I was mostly not disappointed. Aside from the 2 red haired gals almost indistinguishable from one another... Seriously, my wife had to demonstrate with screen-pauses and IMDB there were two of these.Salvation is what you would expect the first years of John Connor to be. Not as a Savior, but a man slowly accepted by his peers for what he was raised to be. While the barrier between the socially inept and reality kicks in...Complete with Terminator prototypes, "Mad Max" type ambush and drone chases, battles in mechanic strongholds... Some Hacking and applied strategy, and the whole mix still stung by the poisonous dart of fate. The irony made flesh and chrome. And frankly one of the most original addition to the Skynet bestiary. For something this good, there is one lacking quality however.... and it's a sense of closure. It has none. Salvation works if you plan on viewing the whole franchise, but alone it serves only as a demonstration of despair and mayhem. It does give credibility to the need of all the time shenanigans however.
