Q: Is this a good piece to start for a beginner to whittle? ( 10yr old)

Absolutely, this was a great training wood for me when I started carving a little over a year ago. Good luck, have fun, and don't give up!!

Generally pipes are made from a hardwood known as briar that comes from North Africa. If you check on Amazon samples are sold of it. It is generally more expensive than basswood which you would have issues with both from the fact that it might burn too easily and that it might impart a taste or flavor to it so I would recommend against making a pipe from basswood for anything other than ornamental purposes.

Q: Is this block of wood strong enough to hold up a window until I get the window fixed?

should be no problem :) however I would use some scrap wood instead of this one - this one is loved by wood carvers and that is why it is that expensive. Just drive to the nearest homedepot - they have plenty of wood scrap :)
