Action Whirligigs: 25 Easy-to-Do Projects (Dover Crafts: Woodworking)

Read Book Carefully
This is a very good book. If you want to make whirligigs you will find good instructions, patterns and ideas in here. I suggest that if you are a novice or somewhat skilled woodworker that you read all of the instructions before you begin a project and make sure that you understand them thoroughly. Some things in this book do take a moderate amount of skill. Other parts of the assembly can be done more easily than Mr. Lunde explains if you seek out some help from another source. Because of that I deduct one star. That being said, as a hobbyist woodworker I am aware that I am learning as I go along, my skills improve with each project, and that some things will have mistakes in them or not look as good as more skilled woodworkers. As Tommy Mac says on his show: "Guys, just spend some time behind the tools." Your skills will improve too the more you work at it.

Disappointed
You are not able to preview any of the pages that have a picture of the project when deciding to buy this book. My sole reason for buying this book was to restore a Cranking the Car whirling that my dad made for me decades ago. The paint is all faded on all parts, so I want a clear picture of the colors used.Nope, just black and white pictures.

fun projects
What a great value! Very easy instructions. Copy pattern and enlarge 300% to get the correct size.

I believe that the directions could be more clear.
I believe that the directions could be more clear. All the information is there but it was written by someone very experienced in making whirlygigs and it comes off like they assume that you have a general knowledge of the subject, to begin with. I am a novice and have no previous experience. I expected the directions to be more clear. The illustrations are really dark and are of no use. The patterns are not full size and will have to be transposed to another piece of graph paper to be made bigger. Like I said all the information is there and I will be able to use it but if your expecting a place part A to part B type of directions then this isn't what you're looking for. The patterns are cute and I received my order quickly.

Not what I expected.
No full size patterns. A lot of layout required. Propellers difficult. That said, with a little work you can figure it out

OK Projects
I retired a couple of years ago, and last year I bought a scroll saw. I also subscribed to a Scroll Saw and Woodworking magazine. I saw this book advertised in the magazine, so I bought it (and several others). There are a couple of whirligigs in here that I might be interested in making as gifts. Easy to follow instructions. I would have given it a 5 star rating if there were a few more projects to my liking in there. But I was really looking for something with more moving parts. Good book for the money.

I made one of the whirligigs following the instruction so the book accomplish what I expected. The one start missing the maximum in my score is due to the way the instructions are laid down, I would rather to have instructions for item 1, then item 2 and so on instead of mixing different parts in one item.

The Winds of Change
Good detailed information on making these fun models. I've made six models up to date and I've had a great time making them. Clear instructions and diagrams make this book easy to follow. I've now started to adapt many of the ideas and have begun to personalise some models. Good price; well worth the money an asset in the workshop. I would highly recommend this book to any wood crafter.

Plenty of action
I bought this book before I retired as a Design and Technology teacher in a secondary school. I found the projects to be excellent for the more able students in a subject which is increasingly turning to CAD/CAM. While I understand that students should be familiar with the processes used in "real life" I think it is essential that they also understand how to use hand tools and basic materials. This is one of several books I bought which I believe further this ideal and highly recommend it, especially for after-school clubs. There is also the fact that kids love things which do something, and this book is filled with that kind of project.

Good selection of easy projects
Graphics were very poor, imperial measurement confusing all drawings and measurements should be in metric.

A great introduction to whirligigs. Inspiring!
A bit American in its language and imperial sizes for wood and wire etc but this is not much of a drawback if you use google. Some great ideas for projects and very helpful information on the types of tools and materials you will need. Good photographs and well written. I am inspired and ready to make my first lockdown whirligig !
