The Polar Bear

This is a gorgeous book with lovely illustrations. It is chalk full of facts about polar bears but is written in such a way that it is understandable for little ones, for instance when talking about how much a polar bear weighs she says 1,000 pounds or equal to 20 seven year olds. I like the way the book starts, with a little girl picking a book off the shelf and reading about polar bears. Then through the rest of the book you see her pop up on certain pages as you learn more about polar bears. The decision to have text be part of the illustrations also woks as a nice break, I found the younger readers scan those parts while I read the story. The book is strong in facts about Polar Bears, I think everyone will learn something when they read the book. Some things discussed in the book are how big a Polar Bear is, how and when they hunt, how they swim, family dynamics, and much much more. I like the fact that the book is written with so much information you can read it to young children and keep it as they grow to be used in things like book reports or fact checking.

Wonderful book that is scientifically accurate as well as being a great story for children. The artwork is wonderful too.

This children book is not only a piece of art, it also gives you all the information what you want to know about the king of the arctic. Great to read and look over and over again.

We LOVE Jenni's nonfiction picture books at our house. They're perfect for nonfiction and fiction lovers of any age.I hope she's writing/illustrating more - I'll be buying every single one.

Desmond has written an affectionate homage to the polar bear based on some fine research into its natural history. Its strong visuals will be good to share with young children in a teaching situation particularly in regard to the bear's adaptations to cold. I'm not sure why she avoided the larger context of environmental threats to the polar bears' survival, there are lots of graphics showing diminishing ice in the arctic and its affect on the bears' hunting capacity is seemingly now well known. It was published in 2016 but it's environmental credentials hark back to the 60s.

Great Book! My daughter loves polar bears with a passion and this a great little read for those who love polar bears for children!

I’m now on a mission to get all Jenni Desmond’s books! She has a stunning series on endangered animals and this one is no exception. Beautiful double page illustrations that are so transporting. My son (6yrs) found the text interesting and manageable. Would highly recommend.

Extraordinary in so many ways...stunning illustrations, information presented in such an artistic way...A total immersion into the world and knowledge of the Polar Bear. An inspirational and yet invitational way to present the unique plight of many of our species. Such an encouraging way for all ages to celebrate and share/discuss together the importance of our changing environment and effects on it's inhabitants.An amazing book and will inspire me to be buy Jenni's earlier publication....The Blue Whale. I firstly bought Polar Bear for a grandchild but as a collector and lover of picture books for all ages ...I will add this one to my collection :-)Sheila Cutler

Purchased this book during lockdown. The kids read it a few times but haven't picked it up again. Saying that, if your child has an interest in polar bears specifically this book will likely be a favourite. The illustrations are phenomenal and the information digestible.

Great book with educational info about polar bears. It might be a bit advanced for my 2 yo boy but he will grow with this book over years. I love beautiful drawing!
