Black & White Photos!
How is one supposed to know what coloration(s) a plant has without the benefit of color pictures?!? And many of the photos have very poor contrast so it's hard to distinguish different elements in the picture. This purchase was a total waste of money for my needs.

This book is a great resource for anyone living on the coast in the Pacific Northwest. Not all plants do well on the coast and many other plants survive beautifully. I highly recommend this book. It can help you save energy, money and disappointment on purchasing and planting the appropriate plants and shrubs.

Really for the coast,,,,really
This book by a Master Gardner, is the best for gardening in the Coastal Pacific Northwest.....for veggies and flowers too. I have been gardening here for 15 years still with some monumental failures in crops. I have microclimates and she shows me how to use them better. Thank you Carla!!

Where's the Color?
The book is full of helpful information. My problem with the book is there is an abundance of black & white photos and a limited amount of color photos. Let's be honest, who doesn't enjoy looking at all the pretty color pictures if gardening books. The beautiful colorful pictures of lovely gardens helps me get through the bleak winters.

Read this BEFORE planting!
Finally a book specifically for novice coastal gardeners! How I wish I had had this book BEFORE I planted my coastal garden--I could have saved much time, money and sweat learning the what, which, where, how and when of northwest coastal planting. This is a comprehensive yet detailed book all those gardening in zones 7-9 should keep close at hand. Carla's suggestions on site analysis and planning, soil preparation and plant choices are valuable. Being a fellow Master Gardener, I appreciate and applaud her approach to sustainable gardening practices and her emphasis on gardening with few chemicals. Her writing is clear, concise and pleasant to read.

meh
Not the greatest, sadly. Almost all long form writing, mostly black and white photos, and no real organization to the book to make it a good reference book for gardeners. Unfortunately, it won't be staying on our shelves.

Two Stars
Not what I expected. I was hoping for larger color photos. Lots of text, small ok quality photos.

Parallels with Eastern UK and the Pacific North West
Love any books on the Pacific Northwest s have visited there a couple of times. It's a wonderful place and the folks are just great. Their gardens and arre truly inspiring. As I live on the North Kent Coast there are quite a few parallels in the growing conditions although thier wonters are far harsher than ours. Have just bought 3 beach plum seedlings to complement my American garden theme.
