Not dissappointing at all...
I rated it 5 stars because I love this book, it was everything that I hoped it would be. I saw some gruesome old paintings on this Japanese documentary I watched and wanted to see more paintings like them. This book has pages and pages of gore. By today's standards I think these pictures are still a treat. A great treat actually, because I did not think that for the time period such violence was painted so often. There's not much to read in this book. The back of the book has all the paintings in icon like fashion and have the corresponding titles to them, which explain what is going on in the paintings, which in turn makes the paintings even more violent. I showed a few people this book and most of them get pretty induced in it. So I recommend.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I ...
This is exactly what I was looking for. I picked it up to use for tattoo references. Huge pages in full color.

it's violent alright
It's pretty wicked stuff; definitely not for the delicate or queasy. Despite the abundant gore the images are gorgeous examples of the art of woodblock printing.

Good pictures, absent text.
Some of the images here are hard to find, or have never been published before. But it would be nice to know a little about the images, more than artist and title. The quality of many of the reproductions is also poor - things have been blown-up too much, and the color tones seem very wrong in many of them - too much photoshop perhaps.

Perfect Reference Book
Great reference book for namakubi, shibari, and Japanese blood pattern textures. Highly recommended for traditional Japanese tattoo reference collection or morbid art collectors.

Cheap Thrills
This is one of the few recent publications in English available on the 19th century Japanese print artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. This new book should therefore to be welcomed, particularly as it deals exclusively with the violent and bloody prints that have rightly or wrongly given the artist his notoriety.Just over 80 such prints are reproduced in full page colour, with blown up details and a thumb-nail index towards the end.Notwithstanding the relatively low price, the poor quality of reproduction is to be deplored as is the regrettable absence of discussion - serious or otherwise - of the prints themselves. No attempt is made to offer the reader any insight into their artistic significance, the historical events that inspired them or the interaction between image and text, central to any real appreciation of the grandeur of Yoshitoshi. The feeling that the art of this great and complex personality who has been described as "the last master of Ukiyo-e" is sadly reduced to mere superficial sensationalism, ostensibly nothing more than gory images to be gloated over, is reinforced by the tag printed on the front cover in capitals : WARNING ADULTS ONLY VIOLENCE.

Not greatest of quality. Still good visual references
Binding is terrible and the closeups are kind of sucky and grainy. All in all though, it gives me the ukiyo-e references i desired.

Bloody good.
The pictures are clear and colourful and more gory than any blood drenched Samurai slasher flick. As a collector of art books i knew what i was getting into when making my purchase so therefore i don't really need to be patronised by the message on the front cover informing me that the book contains graphic images violence. Its the reason i bought it after all.
