Beautiful and sturdy!
Child uses the pony right on the wooden lid. No need for plastic base. Stands up best on a hard table top, but if using anywhere else, I would keep it on the lid. I would never recommend getting one of these sets that did not have a lid. How shortsighted that design was. Pieces go missing everywhere...OR... you end up having to buy a separate storage container for every set you get. The only exception is Santa Claus. He is in a tray with no lid, but is such a fun, whimsical toy for Christmastime I relented and bought a shallow storage bin for just that set.
