Q: What does the bit about "Create spare outlet when you need one" mean? It's on the top of the Amazon page.

I think it means that if all of your outlets on a power strip are full, then you could read the labels and easily figure out which cord you can unplug and temporarily plug something else into.

Q: Does writing on them with an ink pen work? One reviewer said after a week, the ink soaks into the rubber itself leaving an ugly, untidy, smeared word. Is this correct? Has anyone compared these tags to the Dotz Cord Identifiers or the Unitag Snap Tag Cable Identifiers?

I didn't use a pen because of the shiny surface. I thought it would smear. I used a fine point sharpee and that worked great.

The entire label is 3 inches long, and 1/2 inch wide. The actual size of the white label is 1.5 inches long and a smidge less than a 1/2 inch at its widest point.

Q: So if these do smear to some degree is there anything else out there better to label HDMI, Component, Coax and RCA cables?

I use my Dymo LetraTag for creating bacle or cord labels. They are fantastic for this purpose. Clear printing, no smearing, easy to read, sticks well.
