Dietz #80 Blizzard Hurricane Oil Lamp Burning Lantern Black with Gold Trim

I bought this after seeing them at the safari lodges I stayed at in Africa. These feel cheap and light compared to the old ones they had back in Africa, but I am still really very happy with it. The glass is real glass (not plastic) and everything works and it looks good. I will update this if anything changes.

I am impressed with the quality of this hurricane lantern. I also own a European lantern and I find this Dietz to be of about the same solid quality. We used it last night and there were no leaks no issues and it throws a nice light. It is the largest of the hurricanes I believe and it is pretty.

I like it even though it's a little dim but for emergency lighting it works great and looks really nice

I absolutely love this lantern. I wish I had purchased one decades ago. If you are debating between this one and a cheaper version, I would get this one. The light output is equal, if not greater, than a two mantel Coleman lantern.This is my first actual Dietz lantern. I wish I had learned the differences a long time ago.

First the good stuff. The lantern a good looking piece and provides nice ambiance if that is what you are looking for. It is rated at 9 candlepower and that is accurate. It is not a bright lamp and provides barely enough light to read by. The 9 candlepower rating should tell you that. If you are looking for a bright light, you will need something that runs on propane, camp fuel, or gasoline ( yes gasoline). Check out Coleman lanterns if that is what you want. This lamp is nice for a candlelight dinner or for lighting a part of your campsite that is away from the fire.This lamp is easy to refuel, but it does not hold very much. It lights very easily with either a torch or a long stem lighter. Changing the wick is a bit difficult because extracting the burner out from under the glass cover is tricky. Don't use force as you will be tempted to do because the lamp is very lightweight.

Functions perfectly.

This is my second Dietz lantern. Buying a second one emphasizes brand faith. And brand faith could only come from appreciation of quality.The quality of this 80 is apparent. I had some low quality department store hurricane lanterns in the past for emergency use for power outages. Those gave me a bad impression in construction and operation. Generally defined as flimsy and clunky with a leaky fount. It is just that I haven't seen a higher quality ones like this Dietz 80 and the earlier purchased model 90.The big difference is in the feel of the product. "Solid" basically describe it well. The flimsiness, clunky-ness, and the leakiness of the department store type are not present on these Dietz. The mechanism controlling the wick is smooth, solid and robust (as for a 7/8" wick). The globe lifter lever's operation is firm and solid. The chimney (globe holder) is the same.The bottom line is that, these lanterns are on the expensive side. However, the quality of these lanterns truly reflects their worth.Highly recommended.
