Forced to read for class. Didn’t enjoy it as much as other books, but might be because I just read a really interesting one before it.

Purchased for a class on European Thought in the Post-War period, focusing on France. This book is a good exploration on the subject of the relationship between the colonizer and the Colonized, and explores many concepts found in other works, such as Sartre's Existentialism is a Humanism, Cesaire's "Discourse on Colonialism", and Fanon's "The Wretched of the Earth" and "Black Skin, White Masks". It is relatively clear, and a relatively easy read

Will help self understanding
The book is succinct. He discusses what characterizes the colonizer and the colonized. Colonization harms both. Both regain their dignity when it ends. To be free, the colonized must also conquer himself after the colonial relationship ends.

An articulate cry against colonialism -- for its time.
This this Jewish Tunisian write was born 100 years ago, so it is not surprising that he is so profoundly immersed in Patriarchal thinking. This book speaks only and always of "men" in the generic, meaning humans. While Memmi makes a detailed analysis, much more relevant thinking has gone on about power relations subsequent to this text.

Colonialism as a spiritual disease
I downloaded this book on a whim but as I read through it I recognized in Memmi's analysis the spiritual and mental malaise of American white and POC populations. I would recommend reading this to anyone interested in a thorough analysis of the the many faults and injustices of racist policy in the US. I look forward to reading his work titled "Racism".

Review
Coming from Africa, this book written by a french Jew brings to light the issue of racism, colonialism and domination of the oppressed people of the Third World. It provides a philosophical perspective on the situation of the colonizer and of the colonized.Very good book. Thanks

Copy as good as new
Because I am familiar with this book by Albert Memmi since first read years ago. This copy is in excellent condition, as if it were brand new. Seller complied with delivery date. As a matter of fact it was delivered prior to date promised. Superior packaging, quite similar to those used by book sellers of brand new titles years ago.

A must-read for everyone who wants to understand how power works, between cultures, social levels, and people in general. The colonization situation can be translated into almost every other human interaction where there is an unequal power.
