The Odyssey: A BabyLit® Monsters Primer

Everyone loves monsters!
We love BabyLit books, but I particularly like this one because of the unusual subject matter (monsters!). Every kid I have known has loved monsters at some point, and to have a book dedicated to them with specific names for different monsters is great.I honestly cannot recall more than the gist of the original Odyssey, but I do love how simple elements from the classic tale are brought to life with the illustrations here. Growing up hearing the names of the monsters will bring a familiar element to the original story when readers are older.

No story, but lots of cute pictures
This book is ok, but only if you have a pretty good idea of the story behind the Odyssey. It little just has a drawing of a monster and it's name and a one-line description. If you don't know the Odyssey well, you won't be able to explain much to your little one. This book may do well for a child who is beginning to tell their own stories, or for literary-minded parents to extemporize Odysseus' trip home.At the least, the colors are bright and the monsters look friendly, so it might also be a good way to introduce monsters in a non-scary way to little readers.Overall, I would have preferred this book to tell Odysseus' story instead of just meeting the monsters, but it is a cute addition to our little one's library.

Some Quotes From The Odyssey, With Cool Pictures
I don't see this one becoming a favorite of my kids. I like doing voices for all of the monsters, but I think that it just being a loose collection of quotes keeps it from being really fun. A simplified version of the storyline would make this a better kids' book. Also...I know this is a "monsters primer", but Odysseus isn't even mentioned. The illustrations are great, but my toddlers don't seem to be particularly interested in them.

My first book from BabyLit.
My first book from BabyLit. I am excited because I love the classics and I love the idea of them being retold for toddlers. I can't wait to share this with my little one. This book is vibrant and has beautiful illustrations. It only gives the description of the different creatures in the Odyssey but none the less it still seems like a book my son would like to have read to him.

A bit too scary, but great customer service
Wow! I got a complete refund and didn’t even have to return the item! I’ll definitely be gifting this now to a family that does not have a “Lotus!” One of the monsters is the lotus eaters, when I saw that and then the next page about the cyclops eating “all of your friends then you”... I decided this was probably going to be a bit too scary for my 2yo. nephew. I still love this series, I just wish I had gotten to flip through this particular book first.

Must-have for parents who love the classics
Bought this for a friend's baby because we studied the Odyssey together in school and it is hilarious with great art. Perfect present for a classics student or professor, or a young some-day appreciator of great books.

The illustrations are cute but if you are looking for ...
The illustrations are cute but if you are looking for a way to introduce your little one to the classics, keep looking. It's just illustrations of some of the monsters from The Odyssey, no story element.

It was just too simple for any age of individual in my family to enjoy. Such a disappointment
The cover is cute and so are the illustrations inside, but there are so few words inside the book! It is not a book that gives any kind of learning or further understanding of the Odyssey. It was just too simple for any age of individual in my family to enjoy. Such a disappointment.

Very engaging and unique
Our almost 10 month old son loves this book and has for some time. They are simple, colourful illustrations of various monsters and creatures featuring in the Odyssey with their names, a short line and a monster sound. I think he mainly enjoys us making the monster sounds at this stage but we’ve enjoyed looking up the various creatures and reminding ourself of the story. This gets a lot of points for being a bit different (there are tons of baby books out there about farm animals, not that many about ancient monsters). I also love how this manages to capture his attention without flaps or sounds or textures. Thoroughly recommend!
