Blues: Absolutely Essential 3 Various

The good stuff
This set is mostly that early Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Ma Rainey blues that set the foundation for everything that was to follow. There’s also a little over one disc’s worth (out of three) of the electric pioneers like BB, Howlin Wolf, and Muddy. All in all, a superb set for either the consummate blues connoisseur or the newbie just dipping their toes in the genre.

Doo-Wop That Delivers!
Up until now I have never had a decent doo-wop collection. Maybe just an odd song or two included on a soundtrack or a certain Rhythm, Love And Soul collection[But that's a different matter]. Even though I've heard pretty much of the songs included from this set throughout my life since childhood on AM radio stations(i.e. WABC, WNBC, WMTR) and most especially WCBS-FM when it started out in 1972, I fully realized why doo-wop has been so popular. First of all, the performers of these classics delivered their vocals with honesty and passion which is much more than I could say about current artists and people who have even interpreted these works.Over the course of 3 discs you have 60 recordings which includes a pair of classics each by The Cardinals, The Harptones, The Orioles, The Clovers, The Moonglows, The Platters, Dion & The Belmonts, The Cleftones, and The Spaniels. It may come as a surprise to most people that the version of "Little Darlin'" is by The Gladiolas rather than The Diamonds which most people have been used to. Regardless, it's good to have it here. Also worth noting is "Riot In Cell Block #9" by The Robins[Before they became The Coasters]. One of The Orioles featured tunes here is "Crying In The Chapel" which was later covered by a certain Elvis Presley. The Spaniels would provide "Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight" for the oldies nostalgia group Sha Na Na for their closing number of their shows if not TV series. A certain Janis Joplin would later interpret The Chantels' "Maybe" with her Kozmic Blues Band in 1969.My main favorites from this collection are The Penguins-"Earth Angel"; The Del-Vikings-"Come Go With Me"; The Monotones-"The Book Of Love"; Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers-"Why Do Fools Fall In Love"; The Gladiolas-"Little Darlin'"; The Five Satins-"In The Still Of The Night"; The Imperials-"Tears On My Pillow"; The Crows-"Gee"[Which Brian Wilson briefly incorporated into the Smile project]; The Rays-"Silhouettes"[I also like the Herman's Hermits version as well]; The Platters-"The Great Pretender"; The Marcels-"Blue Moon"[Now who WOULDN'T like this one]; Dion & The Belmonts-" A Teenager In Love" and "I Wonder Why"; Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs-"Stay"; The Spaniels-"Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight"; The Crests-"16 Candles"; and The Robins-"Riot In Cell Block #9". It would have been nice to have songs like "When You Dance"(The Turbans), "Step By Step"(The Crests), "I Believe"(Larry Chance & The Earls), "Diamonds And Pearls" (The Paragons); "The Duke Of Earl"(Gene Chandler); and "The Stroll"(The Diamonds). But this is a great doo-wop set to start off with regardless. If you want a reasonable doo-wop collection, but not too much. I recommend this definitely.

Serious overlap with "Bebop Spoken Here" box set
This 3 CD set from Big 3 is a solid collection of classic bebop. It's well worth the nominal price, as is usually the case with these Big 3 sets. There's no booklet detailing individual players or recording details, but at this price point one shouldn't expect that. The only problem I have with this set is that 50 of its 60 cuts are also contained on the 97 song Properbox 4CD set, "Bebop Spoken Here". Of the remaining ten tracks, the two collections both offer up "Donna Lee", differing only in the artist performing the song.

Outstanding value: 60 original hits at a bargain orice
I've been looking for an economically priced collection of original doo wop classics by the original artists, and this 3-CD set packed with 60 songs fits the bill. There are a number of CD collections out there where the fine print tells you that you're getting NEW recordings by the "original artists" (groups that use the original group names but may or may not sound like the original performers -- and the Amazon.com listing may not say so), but this is not one of those. These are the actual recordings you've heard on jukeboxes, records, and the radio for years and years. There are no liner notes at all, but for those who want a lot of original doo wop classics at a bargain price, this set delivers.
