Excellent book despite a significant error
An excellent book containing one significant mistake. When betting taxation changed it wasn't to 15% of turnover as stated...that would have wiped out bookies' profits; it changed to 15% of GROSS WIN, significantly increasing bookies' profits. Also, Ladbrokes hadn't recently purchased 'the rights' to the Hilton brand, they'd purchased the actual chain (Hilton International) many years earlier; Ladbrokes owned every Hilton hotel in the world except for the US where Hilton hotels were owned by Hilton Hotels Corporation (a different company).

Blood on their hands
A fantastic analysis of the greed shown by the gambling industry. There is no doubt that there will be a tsunami of harm coming down the pope in the US

Has a story to tell but rushed for the Xmas market - and it shows
There's quite a bit of background and seemingly informed detail in this book, but the read is marred by what seems like a total lack of editing. The text is racy - too racy; there are too many unexplained acronyms and arcane jargon (what does WAP mean?). There is no index, no bibliography, no chapter notes. Infuriatingly, the author more than once makes the amateurish error of writing "reticent" when what he means from the context is "reluctant". Tramore is in Co. Waterford, not in Co. Wexford. This book had the potential to sit alongside "Liar's Poker", but a lot more needs to be done before Michael Lewis will have anything to worry about.

Mugs game
Think betting is just a harmless pass-time ?? Think again after reading this .It's a multi billion euro operation designed to keep punters losing money and enticing them to keep coming back for more . Betting really is a mugs game with serious consequences for alot of unfortunates who become addicted to it
