Helped for 12-hour volleyball tournament planning
We really liked the smart thinking in this book. My child is a multi-sport athlete and quite fit, and eats a TON of food. She plays club volleyball, and planning snacks and meals around a 12-hour tournament day (especially when they might go for 2-3 hours without a break) was daunting. This really helped me get her the energy she needs. Before this, I was doing a lot of things "wrong" - feeding her the larger meals too close to game times, and trying to get her to eat protein snacks just before a game - and since I've read this book, she has performed better and had a more consistent energy level. I can even see the difference between her and her teammates based on what I see them all eating and when. Now it makes sense to me!

Practical, short and helpful
This is a very clear, straightforward book with lots of helpful suggestions and some recipes. Cynthia Lair's book, Feeding the Whole Family, is my all-time favorite cookbook, so I was hoping for more recipes, but it's still helpful and the recipes it has are good ones. I had my teenage son read it and he actually got a lot out of it--he changed some of his eating habits because of it. It's well written and has lots of practical advice about that to eat, when to eat it, and why your body needs it. It also has good suggestions for quick snacks, good choices for when you're travelling, and other practical tips. LOVE this author.

Good information - not sure about the recipes
The nutrition information is concise, approachable, and attractive. My 11 year old had no problem understanding what the target nutrition balance is, and how to eat a good diet of basic foods (with less additives and junk). However, the recipes are absolutely useless. Who the hell, especially parents of busy athletic teens, has time to cook things overnight, the money to buy stuff like salmon, dates and quinoa, or has on hand ingredients like tamari, tahini or teff flour??? This book smacks of being written by a bubble-wrap Mom with unlimited resources on hand - nothing like me or any of the families I know. That being said, I'm glad I bought it, because we can figure a way to follow the guidelines on our budget and timeline. Just not HER way.

Phenomenal educational book for parents and their athletes!
This book was featured in the USA Swimming magazine, Splash. As a mother of two swimmers, one 9 and the other 11, it keeps us focused on a routine for nutrition and hydration during training and swim meets. That said it especially helps us plan breakfasts, school lunches, snacks and dinners. Great reading material for your young athlete as well.

Good info for athlete or parent
Good information, easy to read for either child (maybe 5th grade and up) or parent. Some of the recipes don't strike me as particularly child-friendly, and I have a kid who will eat almost anything, but an overall good book.

Excellent book for young athletes
Excellent book for young athletes. Very practical, usable information presented in an accessible way. Love it! I am a naturopathic physician and I recommend this book for many of my young patient athletes.

Completely changed the way we feed our whole family (and shop for food)
Excellent ideas for meals, snacks and general nutrition. This book isn't for everyone though. If you think cooking real food with whole-food ingredients is critically important then buy this book. Otherwise just keep buying those lunchables and gummy "fruit" snacks for your poor kids.

Invaluable
Purchased for a friend whose teenage child is very into his sports, who is also very finicky with his food. My friend took him to see a Nutritional Consultant and actually everything the Nutritionalist told her was in this book. Overall the book was extremely informative and useful and she highly recommends it.
