affordable access to what is clearly a work of love.
For everyone interested in Spanish colonial music, this is a good-natured, well-written and thorough overview--the ur-text of the field. Craig Russell, the father of these studies, swings from general information appealing to every reader to detailed analyses of different versions of certain pieces, which not every reader needs to know. (But is invaluable to those who do.) We are lucky to have paperback, affordable access to what is clearly a work of love.

What You Did Not Know About the Culture of California Missions
A scholarly trip back into the eighteenth and nineteenth century culture of the California (and tangentially Texas) missions. What did they sing and who did the singing. The casual reader may not like all the footnotes, but the half-serious student of music and history will get a lot out of it.

Xlnt musical dissertation; less on history
I think I was expecting more commentary on the history of presenting music at the missions and the ways in which the mission musical presentations created a social center of the area. This is, however, an excellent recap of the music itself.

there is some good information buried in the remaining text
Extremely biased on the side of colonization, the need for California Indigenous peoples to be civilized, apologist for genocide and violence that resulted. If you can read around that structure, there is some good information buried in the remaining text. I much prefer The Power of Song by Kristin Dutcher Mann, whose scholarship is more even and explores the political and nation-building aspects of music in California missions.
