Reading Arabic Made Easy!
I got this book a couple of months ago to try and learn to read a little Arabic before I left for a second trip to Cairo. I got through with about half of the alphabet, but I was still able to read signs and packages while in Egypt. I took the book with me so I could look up the letters I had not learned and it was great. It started from square one so I didn't have to know anything about the language. Since I had already learned to speak some Arabic, it was neat to see how the words were written. I can't wait to finish all of the lessons and build my written Arabic vocabulary. The DVDs are priceless with helping you to sound out the letters and words while you are learning. The visual parts of the DVDs are great too. They show you the movements of the mouth when making the various sounds in the Arabic alphabet. This is very important since several letters are slightly different in sound and you need to see how it is mouthed. The other visuals showing how to write the characters are also fantastic. This has to be the fastest, easiest way to learn to read a foreign language with a completely different alphabet.

Absolutely Brilliant!
I cannot talk highly enough about this series! I have been trying to learn Arabic independently over the last 6 months, in which time I have bought numerous books and dvds to help me. None of these compare to this one: the book is clearly layed out with exercises that are simple to understand and increase in difficulty as you progress through each step. The DVD puts Linguaphone's to shame: it has a menu that makes navigation easy, a variation of teaching techniques for all learners and the sound is of a good quality. I would highly recommend this to anyone trying to learn Arabic independently or with tuition. Al-kitaab fii ta allum al-arabiyya follows this book in the series and is equally as excellently written.

General comments
Item in good conditions (only a few notes here and there) and dispatched on time. This book really meets the expectations of any English speaking person willing to learn Arabic. Though it's not suitable for all areas (it's mainly the Arabic spoken in Egypt), its structure supported by audio and video gives a good clear base to learn how to read and write. Of course, Arabic learning cannot only be achieved through this book (the following volumes of this series are very good).

Very complete
I have been using this book in my college Arabic classes three years now. It is an excellent book and is very complete. The DVDs supplement the book nicely. It would be almost impossible not to be able to learn the Arabic alphabet and some basic vocabulary with this book. The problem I have with using it for my classes is that you have to complete 7 of the 10 chapters before knowing all the letters which means we've covered almost half the semester before we can use words that contain some of the latter letters in the alphabet. I'm planning on writing my own curriculum to fix this problem from now on, but I can honestly say that I would recommend this book without reservation, either for use in class on in self study. It won't do a whole lot beyond teaching you to read, write and understand the alphabet and writing system, but that's a big start in Arabic. The Arabic language is not any more difficult than any of the Indo European languages to learn once you have mastered the alphabet.
