The History of Music in Fifty Instruments

Lovely, quality book with beautiful illustrations of musical instruments and historical information about the origins and inventors of each one. I learned a lot! I sent for one for our musically inclined grandsons, ages 10 and 12, for their spring birthdays, and I think they will be most interested in their own instruments, of course, which are the piano, violin, saxophone, and guitar. I was disappointed that the ukulele was not included in the book, as they also play one of those. But every other conceivable instrument seems to be there, and it is really a lavish volume and well worth the price. I did wonder why the instruments were not arranged alphabetically, but that's a minor point. I'm very glad it's a hardcover book, as I usually buy hardcover when I can, especially for kids.

I bought this as a Secret Santa gift for a co-worker, and she absolutely loved it. The book has a beautiful look and feel, nice illustrations, and historical information to go with the photos. As a classical musician, I was tempted to keep it for myself, but relented and delivered the gift after all. The book is now on MY wish list.

This was a fascinating book. It gave great insight before I went to the MIM (musical instrument museum) in Phoenix AZ.

This is a well written book, elegantly designed for classical music lovers. It describes in details the unique history of each instrument, design and built. You may not be interested in reading about all the fifty selected instruments, but you will definitely enjoy learning about the instruments you are interested in.
