The Garden of Eve

My first book by K.L. Going...
Even though this was the first fiction book I've read by K.L. Going, I found her writing refreshing. I had been inspired to read this after purchasing her book, "Writing and Selling the YA Novel", since, being an aspiring writer, I was curious about her style. Even though, this is not a YA novel, since the protagonist, Evie, is only eleven years old, it has all of the elements of a good book. Through Evie's heartbreak of losing her mother, she felt alone and isolated, even though she still had her father. They were dealing with grief, each in their own way. Her father felt compelled to leave the area of their home, taking Evie with him, isolating her from friends and relatives, they move to a farm with a large orchard, next to a cemetery. She befriends a boy, who says he's a ghost, and together they have an adventure that makes Evie value and appreciate her father. It has an interesting "twist" regarding her new "ghost" friend, which I hadn't expected, and I liked. I would recommend this book for girls 9-12 years old.

Good memories
I read this book as a kid and I'm so glad I decided to revisit it now as an adult. I had a hard time trying to find a mother figure in my life and this book really helped me through it as a child and reminded me now that magic really does exist in the world.

Magical but simple and to the point.
I loved this book. It had strong supernatural themes, but the real world tragedy of Evie's mother almost upstages the magic and I mean that in a good way.The writing is refreshingly straightforward. I don't mean this as an insult or negative, and it does have some elements, but its not a "literature" book. Most sentences and passages are deceptively simple and a breeze to read while still telling a deep, complicated, and moving story.I just finished a book of short stories by Ray Bradbury where every single sentence is poetic and literary and, to be honest, exhausting. So Going's straight forward style was a welcome change. And it's also nice to read a young adult novel with supernatural situations that doesn't in ANY way resemble Harry Potter. I've read some good books which tread not so lightly in the footpaths of Potter, but this novel was unique. There's also a huge spectrum of ages that would enjoy this book from about 11 or twelve (bot most definitely 13) all the way up to grown adults.

"The Garden of Eve" Review
"The Garden of Eve," by K.L Going, combines with the genres of fantasy and mystery. A girl named Evie moves with her father, who has purchased an apple orchard in Beaumont, NY, after a tragic event of her mother occurred. She has been receiving rumors that the orchard is cursed, but after her mom passed, magic and curses weren't in her belief anymore. She later meets a boy who claims to be a ghost, and receives a seed for her birthday. After planting the seed, only Evie and the boy can see it, and they just took themselves into a whole new world.Overall, this book was truly amazing! Evie encounters the way of life without a mom, but then understands why she was still living. My favorite character, honestly, is Evie because she is internally strong, in spite of tragic events. At age eleven, it must be difficult to have no mother standing by you in the real world. She comes from a large city, but moves into a small town, to try to start a new life. I can also relate to the boy, Adam, who claims to be a ghost, because even though I don't have a brother, it must be difficult for him to live alone, now, especially from losing somebody you loved. If I loss someone, I would also feel like hiding from everyone, too, because life is just hard.Briefly, my favorite part of the story is when Evie and the boy found the birth of a whole new world, with only them in it. It was just so unexpected for that event to occur because I couldn't understand how the unusual seed can cause a large impact towards the apple orchard. On the contrary, I have no least favorites in the book, only because everything was just a page-turner! But, if I am able to change something in the book, it would be when Evie meets Adam in the cemetery. In fact, at first it made no sense how a boy lives in the cemetery, therefore I would think it would be best that they met somewhere else.Furthermore, I recommend this book to young adult readers who enjoy reading a book with a mixture of fantasy and mystery. I gave this book, 5 stars, because K.L. Going taught a very strong moral in this book. He ends every chapter with something to think about, but everything seems to connect in the end. There is no other book this can relate to, therefore, "The Garden of Eve" explains the realities of life and death, and is one of the best books that I ever read!

Magic!!
Dieses Buch ist einfach wunderbar. Der Schreibstil ist schรถn und die Story einfach magisch. Ich bin 35 Jahre alt und habe mich richtig verzaubern lassen. Erinnert mich etwas an Coraline! Ich finde, dass man einen Film aus diesem Buch machen sollte. Ich will mehr davon!!
