Works well, lots of prep work!
I used this to restore a power supply casing that had started to become pitted and rusty (used to be hot dipped and shiny when new). I used a dremel steel wire wheel bowl-style brush to remove the rust spots and do a light sanding to the affected underside.I opened the pint of the zinc coating to find it had totally separated. I guess this is why the instructions make such a big point about mixing and stirring. There was a thick sludge at the bottom, ful of silver-like particles, this was the zinc. I took a small paddle-like metal piece I had lying around the shop and placed it in a corded drill chuck and proceeded to mix the coating that way, changing both direction and swirling motion, plus trying to use the paddle piece to reach the inside edges of the can to completely get all the bottom sludge.I’d say I managed to touch/mix about 97% sludge into the mixture. The overall color was a dull graphite-like color (similar to the mark on the top of the can).Because I was only painting a small area I opted for using a brush. While this did work and provided full coverage, it did leave brush marks. I attempted to have all the marks going in a single direction to produce an affect similar to brushed metal finishing.I only performed a single coat. After 24 hours it dried and seemed to stick well. It couldn’t rub it off with my hand (hard) nor could I easily remove it with my finger nail. So it seems strong enough to me for what it does (establish a zinc coating in place of a previously failed coating).Mixing took a while and was really the hardest part. The instructions tell you this but you need to take it seriously if you want a good result. Use a drill or other mixing device as the sludge makes initial mixing very hard on your wrist and hand, due to the resistance.I can see why spraying this would be very hard if not mixed well, and mixing well is hard so buying this pint was the right choice to better control the process, for me.If you’re needing to use a zinc coating for repair, I didn’t find anything better than this product. So buy this product if you’re undertaking such a project.
