A noble effort for the band to properly release their early songs
The only songs I've heard by Mudvayne before hearing this album are "Dig" and "Nothing to Gein". So, technically this was my introduction to the band. This album really is a major label release of their demo from 1997 with a couple remixes of "Dig" and a montage of "L.D. 50"'s interludes that combines them all together.Having said that, this early demo sounds a lot like the following bands: Korn, Slipknot, and the Deftones. I'm not sure if they were influenced by these bands at all but there is definitely bold similarities on some songs (not that this sound is a bad thing). If anything, Mudvayne were ahead of the game because Slipknot's major label release was years away and at times the time signatures and song structures are more complicated than Korn.As for the demo itself, it's actually pretty solid for just being 8 songs with sometimes lesser sound quality with the live performances that make up a couple of the songs on the demo. The only songs that didn't do it for me were the 1st song which is alright as an interlude or something and "IDIOT" which was not as good as the other songs in my opinion. The remaining six songs actually are just as good as properly mixed Korn and Slipknot songs, in some cases better. Adding the 2 remixes of "Dig" was unnecessary but the one that comes first does it better justice than the one that follows which is kind of pointless. The "L.D. 50" montage of the interludes from that album is interesting to listen to once but you probably won't listen to it much. All in all, this shouldn't be priced at 11.50; it should be priced like an EP because that's essentially what it is and how it plays like. It's not the band's fault that it's priced like that but buy this used for a lower price if you aren't a die-hard fan of the band.Being my formal introduction to Mudvayne, I'd say this album got it's mission accomplished and more; I'll be buying more from this band and I recommend you start here too so you can see how ahead of the curve they were in 1997 and how they just got better over time. (But buy it used at about 6 or 7 bucks, the price of an EP).

...And you'll never amount to nothing
When this was re-released before The End Of All Things To Come was about to be released I was craving Mudvayne music I'd never heard before. This wetted my appetite appropriately with an extremely raw look at the subtle beginnings of one of my favorite bands. I hated it when I got it though. I more or less got this simply as a collector's addition since it was previously Kill I Oughtta, but now when I go back and listen, despite all it's imperfections, I love every second. One thing that Mudvayne fans who have yet to hear this should know is that The Beginning Of All Things To End is far from perfect. Chad's voice is grainy, the band's playing misses a few beats and sounds off sometimes, but I doubt Mudvayne released this in hopes of it sounding perfect, they probably just wanted to be heard and this definitely does the trick.Poop Loser, however hilarious the title is, is a great opener. Nothing complicated, just Chad repeating the same mantra over and over progressively getting more angry eventually resulting in an all out scream. Poop Loser moves swiftly into Seed, a high energy song that really shows the roots of Mudvayne. Compared to the newer stuff, through the first part of the song, it's quite the opposite. Chad's saying he loves his parents and as the song progresses he lets more hate out. There's no doubt that this is still a highlight in Mudvayne's catalog. Cultivate is my personal favorite song on here. From beginning to end it's one of Mudvayne's more consistent songs. One thing this song demonstrates, that the whole CD promotes, is rather poor song writing. Yes, the songs are written well to a certain point, but the lyrics are full of teenage angst, but as the band grew up and matured so did their lyrics, same goes for the musical aspect of the band. That's just another thing that makes The Beginning... a good CD, the fact that in every song there's a few flaws. Cultivate is vocally the best song offered with a particularly good chorus. Some Assembly Required, as far as I know, is Mudvayne's only outright jab at God and religion. Lyrically, this is ahead of it's time, telling of priests sexual activities long before they were brought into light so promintently. The band sounds very good here with a great beat accompanying. Central Disposal is a great song that seems to be recorded live. If in fact it is live it shows how good Mudvayne sounds live. Coal is another favorite of mine that shows similarity to newer material from the band, that being a quiet verses/loud choruses brand of song. Fear rounds out the Kill I Oughtta portion of the CD and does it well. Fear isn't the best song on here but it's got the energy that's really a trademark for this CD. After this song you get two remixes of Dig and what must've been a throw-away track from L.D. 50.Overall, my favorite songs are Poop Loser, Seed, Cultivate, Some Assembly Required, and Coal. This CD does lose my interest a bit after I.D.I.O.T. but when you actually sit down and really listen, it's really got Mudvayne's stamp on it and will no doubt prove to be a CD that loyal fans will always appreciate. Sure, the sound quality is horrible, the vocals aren't polished at all, the lyrics are a bit corny at times, and the music is barely above a garage band's material, but I feel that it shows you the roots of a band that's crawled their way from being unknown to being a band that a ton of people know, and this CD was the stepping stone that gave them notoriety.

Die Frühphase...
...einer in den neueren Werken (L.D.50, The End of All Things to Come, Lost and Found) großartigen Band mag sich mir nicht recht erschließen.

not the best
i bought this cd after i got L.D. 50 and the end... but this isn't really like either of them. i can't really decide if i like it or not. after listening to their 2 full length cds, this was hard to listen to. by all means its still a good cd, its still really heavy and it still sounds like mudvayne, but its early and it shows it. after seeing mudvayne in concert, i found new apprecaition for all there music because they are so damn good at what they do.
