Following the rise of Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom, Respect is the remarkable true story of Aretha Franklin’s journey to find her voice, in the midst of the turbulent social and political landscape of 1960s America.

Purchased Last Year, May 2022 & Just Viewed DVD
I finally took my eyes away from cable to watch the DVD. I enjoyed it immensely, although I cried watching many scenes. The music is basically the story of my own life, as I remember my first time hearing each song. The movie was an inside peek into Ms. Franklin's life as a little girl, and being pregnant at such a very tender age. It leaves the audience guessing, who was that child pedophile? Upon further research, his name is Edward Jordan, the father of her first two boys. His name was left in her will. She never mentioned his name at 12 years old, nor in the movie. the last time she saw her mother, before her mom died, was weeks before her birthday. It left Ms. Franklin devastated, and unable to speak for a time. All of this occurred around the age of her being raped. Her father, a minister, often held Saturday night parties in his home, while Ms. Franklin was asleep in bed, if not beckoned to come down stairs and sing a song. It was during the parties where she was raped in her bedroom. At least, that is what I inferred from the movie. Ms. Franklin lived a life of luxury as a child, and some of the Saturday night parties sometimes included Dinah Washington. She'd met so many GREATS, before becoming one herself, to include being in the presence Martin Luther King. Life had already written a script for Ms. Franklin. She was destined to be who she became. The movie depicted two of her marriages, but did not shed light into the marriage of her and Glen Thurman. The outfits of the 59s, 60s and 70s are basically replicas of her costumes, that even I can remember seeing during that period of her life. ms. Franklin's songs were about love, pain and respect. She experienced what she sang about, and I too, which is maybe why I cried. However, I enjoyed crying during her triumphs, and singing at the old Madison Square Garden was a prime example. Making her first hit with a group of white musicians at a recording studio in Muscle Schoals, Alabama was another. The movie ended too soon, but it gave us enough about her life, from the 50s to the early 70s. I wish for a part 2, to provide sriries from the early 70s and up to the year when she left us in 2018. All in all, this is a beautiful story, that will surely have a true fan in tears. by the way, Ms. Jennifer Hudson sang live throughout the movie, and Mr. Forest Whittaker did his just due as Areatha's father, Rev. C. L. Franklin was instrumental in getting Aretha her first recording contract with Columbia records, and managing her, but after 9 albums and no hits, Muscle Shoals, AL was where the magic happened! Simply, a great and moving life story - to a degree of her life.

A good slice of her life
This gives you a slice of the life of the Queen of Soul. In some cases it is not pretty and like Tina Turner she was physically abused by her first husband that just made you cringe. It ignored the fact that her first child was born when she was 12. Her father wasn't this pure minister like everyone would think. In spite of it all what music she put out after leaving Columbia records! I was disappointed this didn't get any Oscar considerations.

Film-Bio über die Queen of Soul
Was für ein toller Film. Allerdings sehr traurig zu sehen, wie sie aufgewachsen ist und wie sie sich durchs Leben oder ins Leben gekämpft hat. Absolut sehenswert
