A Fun End
It has an ending, a rare ending for a series which does not result in the death of the main character. The only drawback is James Robinson's disjointed storytelling style. He will end on a cliffhanger and then not go back to the scene until two or three issues later. However there are no loose ends to the series. The follow up series, The Shade, is all right, but Robinson has difficulty making a story about a near-immortal overpowered character gripping. Sandman managed this by having the main character of certain arcs be someone other than Dream. Often we in this tale we simply have The Shade showing up, killing everyone, without breaking a sweat. It does get a little samey.

The greatest Comic Book series of the 90's
Most likely you are here because you read book 1 and needed this one. The only minus is Tony Harris leaves and does Covers.

Inconsistent Cover with Compendium One
Great story and art. We all know that. The cover was not great. The first book had a beautiful cover with a matte finish. This one has a not as good drawing of Jack with a glossy finish. The books don’t match very well. There’s only two books in this set, DC could have tried to make them match better!

Great conclusion
Not only collects the rest of the series, but also a fantastic amount of extra content.

Starlight, Starbright or Heavenly Shades of Night are Falling
A masterpiece. Starman was, with Peter David's Incredible Hulk, Giffen and DeMatteis's JL, and William Messner-Loebs/Mark Waid's runs on The Flash, the best superhero comics of the 1990s. James Robinson's creation differs from the aforementioned great runs as it is all *his*, Jack Knight was no one else's and was retired with the series. If anything Starman is closer to Neil Gaiman's Sandman though, like Grant Morrison, Robinson made far greater use of the primary DC Universe; appearances by the Justice Society of America in flashback and the "present" showed there was still plenty of life in those old characters and led to their eventual return (Robinson co-wrote the first five issues of their regular series while Starman was briefly a member before the end of this series). The second compendium concludes the series in grand fashion but also includes a smorgasbord of additional issues, notably, a Must Special - guest-starring Mary/Captain Marvel, the Starman, F.B.I. Agent tale from JSA All Stars (featuring the Star-Spangled Kid/Stargirl!), the 12-issue Shade (Starman's morally ambiguous ex-supervillain chum) series from the era just prior to the hideous New 52, and, as they say, more.If you can afford it, particularly if you see it on offer, buy it!

Finally....the collection is complete
This might be a slightly controversial opinion but I think the writing,in both vol 1 and 2, is far better than Watchmen,Kingdom Come and TDKR. James Robinson's reinvention of the Shade made him my favourite DC character bar non. I would happily buy a prose novel featuring him! The artwork is also first rate and the painted covers are a thing of beauty.
