Piece of Crap
I am bitterly disappointed in this product!!!! It advertises that it is so bright that you can see two nautical miles. I can't see two feet with this thing. And there is no adjustment and no on/off button. What a waste of money!!

First time use and one of the 4 round magnets came off???
Not very bright, maybe a larger version would make things brighter? First time use, arrived today, one of the 4 round magnets on the bottom came off, I thought this made in China junk was supposed to be made sturdy, WTH?

Kept it for all of 20 minutes
Bright? YEP! Lightweight? Yep! Study? Doubtful. Feels like it’s made out of a cheap version of cheap plastic. I was going to keep it as a backup for when storms come and I am without power. I returned it not because it felt like it might break if I dropped it, but rather because it would not close all the way. Since it wouldn’t close, the lights wouldn’t turn off. If I were going to keep it for a backup light, I’d have to keep the batteries out of the unit until I needed to use it. That’s not a complicated process, but I also don’t put just enough gas in my car to make each and every individual trip I take.

Don't believe the advertising
I was looking forward to using light for work, because of the hyped "virtually indestructible "of the protective casing. Lightweight magnets gave way, falling about 6' sending both ends flying, batteries scattering across the floor, and the cover not closing all the way, makes it impossible to shut off, unless you remove a battery. And you can see the brightness of the light at 2 miles, maybe.......if you have a VERY LARGE telescope. Over all performance ...... REAL PIECE of CRAP. Plan on saving item(and pieces) to prove there is NO truth in advertising. Can I give a minus Star rating?

It's not as rugged as they say, but it's pretty good
I've seen this on TV many times (I'm sure we all have) and laugh at the demonstrations they put it through trying to prove that this plastic lantern can be driven over and stuff without breaking. It's plastic people - it will break if you throw it on concrete, but... as long as you realize that it's just a plastic lantern, you will actually be pleased.I purchased this only because of a family member telling me how bright it actually was along with the fact that I just wanted a simple backup light source in case of a power outage. This little guy is definitely bright! It uses LED lights, so it's power consumption compared to traditional lanterns is very low. If you use LED light bulbs in a house, you will know how little power they use. This little lantern has a couple of magnets on the base that allows me to simply stick it to the side of my fridge or metal cabinet when not in use (if you have room). Turning it on simply involves sliding it up and out of the base. Turn it off by closing it. Simple. Batteries last a very long time and even if you need to keep it running for hours, it will only dim down and the batteries lose power (traditional lights will shut off when the batteries get low enough). This is a good little lantern as long as you aren't submerging it in water, or thinking that you can beat the hell out if it. It's plastic and plastic breaks with stress and age. But for a few bucks, this is definitely a good buy for a lantern!

Not happy, waste of money for me
The light does not completely come down (to compact position) to shut it off. You can see the light still shining through the crack of opening. Therefore I would have to just take batteries out to turn off. Not happy, waste of money for me

DO NOT BUY THIS CRAP!!
They should be ashamed to sell this product!! First of all it's all cheap plastic and definitely not waterproof. There is no seal on the battery cover it's just a plastic cap that screws on. I used for one hour in my ice shack hanging above and then it just completely shut off and does not work at all after even replacing the batteries. JUNK!!! DO NOT BUY THIS CRAP!!!

Taclight Purchase
I purchased this lantern to attach to an I-beam above my work bench where I don't have room for a conventional light. It is bright, but the magnets aren't strong enough. I have to be very careful when puling it open or the lantern falls.

Bright as hell.
I bought this for a camping trip this past summer. It is hellla bright. The magnets are certainly strong enough to hold it to a car body, great for light under the hood. I do question the tactical aspect of it, as the plastic body does not give the impression that it could take a beating. However, it does work well and the price isn't insane.

Defective on Arrival, Poor Build Quality
Mine was defective right out of the box. Once the batteries were inserted it turned on and would never turn off once it was closed. Overall the build quality felt really cheap, for something to be used outdoors while camping it didn't feel like it would hold up well. Returned it for a refund and bought a Coleman LED instead.

Bought this light thinking it was a good purchase. Guess what
Bought this light thinking it was a good purchase. Guess what, it was not. It would not shut off when the top was pushed down and it was going through batteries like crazy.I e-mailed the company itself twice asking for a replacement if i sent it back to them. They never returned my e-mails and I ended up throwing the light in the garbage. The customer service at Bell & Howell really sucks and i will never buy another product with that name on it again. All they had to do is reply back to me.

Don't be fooled by advertising hype
There is absolutely nothing true in the Bell & Howell ads for this product. The casing is all plastic and nothing is sealed, there is no way you can submerge this lantern or subject it to anything more than careful handling and expect it to keeping working and last. The light output is also nothing exceptional either - today's small LED flashlights emit more light! The magnetic base holds well on a flat metal surface, the flimsy botton hooks will easily snap. Any ordinary $10 lantern matches the quality and performance of this "tac" labelled device. Given its low value, it is not worth returning, but this is my first very disappointing experience with an Amazon purchase. Do not buy this, you will feel duped.

Pretty Good Lantern
The lantern itself is pretty good. It is bright and can light up an area or room pretty well. I'm knocking off 2 stars though because the packaging looked used to me, like this was repackaged and sealed with a very thin piece of tape. I was under the impression that the item was brand new. Keep that in mind when buying.
