A New Understanding of ADHD in Children and Adults

Great book for understanding someone with ADHD.
Dr. Brown does an excellent job of breaking down ADHD in understandable terms. We have suspected that our son has ADD (non-hyperactive) for years but no one would diagnose him with. The more we read from Dr. Brown the more we were convinced he had ADD. We finally were able to get him tested using Dr. Brown's approach and rating scale. His scores definitely showed he has ADD. Now we can move on to trying to get him the help that he needs! Thank you for empowering us Dr. Brown!

Answer to questions not answered before
I have several children with diagnoses on the autistic spectrum such as AD/HD and Aspergers, and some of them with comorbid diagnoses. My husband has AD/HD. My children are now young adults. The new view of AD/HD, both the expanded view, and the view of AD/HD related to other diagnoses is fullt met by my experience of this through thirty years. I recommend to read books of personal experiences of this affected by this disorders in addition to this book. A book from the same author "Smart but stuck" is also recommended. This book shows the many struggles persons with AD/HD have on daily basis.

Thorough, and insightful
Dr Brown reviews a staggering number of studies in this book, and combines their findings with his observations drawn from years of clinical practice. The result of a book with a lot of depth and insight, He does a great job of explaining the bio/neuro/chemical basis for ADHD, and why it is so persistent and crazy making. I appreciated that the book is based in facts, and not just anecdotal stories. He also has a good discussion of the various medications, and how/why they work. He concludes with a review of other strategies to help those of us who have this disorder to cope with it better. I highly recommend this book to patients and practitioners.

Best highly technical book on the subject
Dr. Brown is a leading researcher in ADD/ADHD. This is a textbook, primarily suited for researchers and medical practitioners. It is thoroughly referenced to the literature. For the public trying to learn about or help a victim of this complicated and difficult to diagnose illness, I think his superb earlier book (2006), with about the same cover design and same overall content, is much more readable. We victims of ADD owe a great debt to Dr. Brown's clear thinking and research. Sadly, the public, teachers, and even medical practitioners do not understand enough about the illness(es), with its huge impact on the victims' lives and the benefit of early treatment.

Description of ADHD
I found this book very informative. It does require knowledge of regions of the brain and some brain chemistry to follow the research data.

Great Book with wonderful insight
I like the new outlook and the expressed clear understanding of the disorder. As a long time sufferer of ADD I take great solace in understanding why I am the way I am and particularly how to deal with it. This book permits me to stop beating myself up for what I now know does not represent the real me. I would recommend this book to anyone suffering with the disorder or attempting to relate to someone with the disorder. Knowledge helps live a better life.

Excellent resource
This is a terrific resource from a top scholar in the field. Dr. Brown uses stories of real people he has seen in clinical practice to illustrate the research he presents. The book is readable and well organized. Dr. Brown includes focus on how ADHD shows in difficulty with regulating emotions and he deals with the myths out there about the disorder. I recommend this book very highly!

Excellent read
Chose this book because Brown is an authority in ADHD. I rented the book and skimmed the first few chapters because I was already familiar with the topics. Spent most of my time readin about the co-existing conditions associated with ADHD which is a very important aspect of the disorder. Every person is a mix of symptoms and not a cookie cutter classic ADD.

An up-to-date account of the origins and mechanism of ADHD, by a leading researcher in the area.
Brown presents here the modern understanding of ADHD as a neurodevelopmental dsyfunction of the brain's executive functions. His own model differs slightly from other researchers such as Barkley, but he is careful to present ideas from both models honestly and contrast the two, and it is clear from his account what is firmly established and what is still open to debate.

Many thanks to the author.
Excellent wide-ranging review of recent-ish research in this important field -- unlike some of the quack books about ADD.Really eye-opening. (He has published more recent books with (slightly) different emphases, but this makes a good start.
