Cultural Competence in Health Education and Health Promotion (Public Health/AAHE)

very disappointed by this text
I am developing a course on Culturally Relevant Healthcare and was so excited to find this book. The more I read it, the more I realized it was deficit focused, painting Black Americans as folks who make many bad personal choices. There was no mention of historical medical atrocities that lead to distrust, no mention of food deserts and a lack of safe places to exercise (obesity rates were attributed to poor decisions alone), no citations from Link and Phelan or David R Williams - in fact "racism" was painted as a misunderstanding on the receiver's behalf. I will not be moving forward with this text.
