Stick with the genuine filter.
Tried using a cheaper after-market brand, and none of them worked with our Kenmore Elite. I'm staying with the genuine brand from now on.

Turned off water under the sink, released some water at the fridge dispenser, twisted old filter out and new one in. No leaks! Run about a gallon through before use to clean any loose carbon.
