Many British Provincial units were raised during the American War for Independence. One well known unit was the Butler's Rangers. They were clothed in regimental coats of green 'turned up' with white and were accoutered like many regular British soldiers. The Rangers frequently worked with their Native allies and were present at both the Wyoming Valley and Cherry Valley massacres giving them a reputation for savagery in combat. The unit was disbanded in 1784.
