Making Friends

Timeless book (just the right length) and sensitive to children's developmental needs
Beautifully written, with excellent photos. Developmentally appropriate for children in nursery school to grade one to around grade two (many adults could benefit from reading it as well.) Mr. Rogers touched the lives of so many people in a positive life-changing way. He is remembered and missed by people from all over the world.

Helps my toddler's social skills
My 3-year-old son just loves this book. This book depicts situations that are a big deal in his world -- small children navigating what to do when, as Mr. Rogers says, "one person tries hard to do things one way and another person tries hard to do things another way." He loves looking at the photos and he laughs at the photos of the kids when they are being silly. During playdates, I have even referenced parts of this book to help him make good choices (e.g., when another child asks him to share a toy he's playing with, I reference something from that part of the book, etc.). Great book!

A book that engages a young child
My almost 4 year old daughter was instantly drawn into this book when we began reading it for the first time. It deals with a topic that she can relate to. As with all young children who are around other kids, she sometimes "fights" with her friends. It is written in a way that the child is fully engaged in the topic of friends and the pictures that accompany each point help the child understand the emotions of others. It reads like a discussion and my daughter often answers the questions Fred Rogers poses about friends as we read. The pictures are dated, but to me, that makes this book unique. The eyes of a young child do not pick up on the dated images...they only see young children like themselves. My little girl loves this book, I love reading it to her, and it's a book she asks me to read over and over. Wonderful book for children.

Dated
The photos are pretty dated. It is good information, but it just didn't keep the attention of my preschool class. I don't plan to read it again.

These books are just the best. I love the questions he asks and my son will reply to them. I love the real photos that narrate what's being said so well. I love love love these. We have the potty book as well. He says just the right thing!! Teaches ME!
