It is Star Anis, Illicium Verum.

my understanding is that essential oils are not edible. there are anise star herbs that are used in cooking. there are those types from Japan that are deadly. google it

Q: What are the uses for this?

I add a few drops to my morning shower (just sprinkle on the shower floor) along with some orange oil drops, and then my morning shower smells like a candy store!
