Great idea, not very high quality paper.
This is a pretty nifty idea. I was very much looking forward to this as a gift for my seven-year-old, as she loves to draw little cartoons (but her frames tend to get smaller and smaller and more misshapen as she goes along, so I thought this would help with that, and it probably will). There are several pages of different stencils included for drawing a variety of frames for making your own comics, graphic novels, whatever. There is also a handy pocket folder included at the front of the pad for storing the templates after you take them out (because you do have to take them out of the spiral-bound pad in order to use them). The stencils are not on very stiff paper; in fact, it's not much stiffer than the drawing paper that comes with the sketchbook. I would call it a light cardstock (not being a paper expert). I think if it was a little sturdier, the stencils would be easier to use, especially for a young person. As they are, I believe she will have to tape them to the sketch page in order to be able to get nice straight lines, which is perhaps the intention anyway (?).Finally, I can't give this sketchbook five stars because the drawing paper was fairly disappointing. Obviously this is not a high-cost item, so I wasn't expecting bristol board or anything, but I think your average markers, and particularly art markers like Copic and Prismacolor, or even Sharpie, would go right through this paper and perhaps even mar the next sheet below. I haven't tried it yet, and when I do, I will revisit this review. But the paper also has a fairly pronounced tooth to it, which I don't usually like when markers are going to be the medium. I guess it would be fine for colored pencils, if you didn't want a high sheen or weren't going to do extensive blending. The paper, in addition to its toothiness, appears soft, so I don't know that it would hold up under much erasing, either. In my opinion, this is probably an okay sketchbook to give a child, or if you want something for roughing out ideas, but you're probably not going to do a lot of your fine drawing in this book. The paper is equivalent, in my mind, to similar drawing pads you can buy in the office/school supply area of your local Big Chain Store for about $4, the difference being that with this one, you get the nifty stencils and handy-dandy pocket for holding them. And of course, there is no reason why you can't use the stencils on better paper, or even, for that matter, cut your own set of stencils out of a manila file folder (making it so that when you put your drawing paper in and line it up against the fold, the stencils are located in the right place and are easily traced because the folder holds your drawing paper in place).I don't want to give three stars, because I do not think the product is defective in any way...but I can't give it five stars because of the paper quality. Overall, I wouldn't buy another one, but that's because to my mind, the stencils are the only thing that sets this sketchbook apart, and we already have them! Your mileage may vary.

The best Christmas gift of the day
My oldest granddaughter has started making comics. She really seems to enjoy the process and the end results are pretty cute. As part of her christmas gift I ordered this comic sketch book so she'd have a little help with the layout. She was so thrilled when she opened it that it was adorable to watch her.The book itself is very good. The paper quality is good and the templates come in a variety of sizes so you can make as many or few panels as you want. I'm sure she'll get good use out of this/

Very cool.
I bought this for my son and he LOVES it. He doesn't use the voice bubble stencil much at all but he uses the heck out of the lay out stencils. My goal was to peal his face away from video games for awhile and this has SO done the trick. He hasn't put it down. It's much larger then I expected which is a total bonus. We will definitely keep this on our wish list for the future to make sure we have one on hand when he fills up this first one. Very cool.

Very cool sketch pad for both my son and nephew who like to create and draw their own comics. The templates are great shapes and styles. My only complaint would be that they are made from the same weight of paper as the sketching paper in the pad and will probably wear out since they are not made from a heavier stock of paper. However, for the price I am very happy with this sketch pad.

Great gift for young comic artist
Pretty decent product, just as described. The paper is on the thin side, which would show ink and marker bleed on the backside and through to the next page. My 10 year old son loved it and has pencils that will be just fine. The stencils are thin as well, and have a gloss finish. Not so thin that they would bend or move while tracing, however, a younger child with less dexterity would struggle with them. The very first page has a convenient pocket in the same glossy paper to hold the stencils. The cardboard back gives enough support that you could hold it in your lap and draw.

Caution - Stencils are Made from Paper, not Plastic
The sketchbook had a different cover which I don't think my son will be as excited about when he opens it up. The one thing I'm disappointed about though is that the stencils for panels and word bubbles are basically just reinforced paper, not plastic, so we could have made these effectively on our own out of cardboard and done just as well. He'll still like it, but it could have been much better.

I've really enjoyed using this comic sketch book
I like using this sketch book. The stencils worked good for me. The only draw back is that since you punch them out you are left with little bumps on the stencils and when i trace them i get the little bumps. Other than that i love it! Also I was annoyed there was no envelope to store the stencils so I spent time creating a pocket and then taping it to the back cover only to discover there IS a pocket in the front and I'm just dumb. So there is a pocket people!!!

Disappointed
In theory this book should be suitable for true imagination and creativity. The "stencils" are very thin & tear easily when removing. The stencil pages are too large to keep in the storage flap included in the book. Storing them between the covers for now. I removed the stencils to assemble before gifting to a 12 yr. old. He found that the thin stencils are not holding up too well.

Great idea but be aware that the stencils are cardboard
This is a great spin on a sketch book that gives it an added bonus as a gift for my budding artist son. The only not-quite-negative aspect of it is that the stencils are part of the sketch book, made of a light cardboard which won't have the same durability of the plastic stencils that I was expecting. The paper is great, the size is excellent and overall, I'm happy with it.

Does what its supposed to.
Only reason not 5 stars, is that the tab on the back of the case, to stand on its side, is very stiff which makes more difficult to set up but not a huge deal.
