Q: I have bought a 60v 5A version, when unit is off and the terminals are fixed to the 50v battery for charging there is a large spark ? do all do this ?

You must be careful with DC circuits especially where voltages are above about 48 volts. The power supply contains huge smoothing capacitors on the output which will charge very quickly if the power supply is turned off or at a lower when you connect a battery to it. The best way to stop the arcing is to put a high powered diode in series with the PSU + output. This diode must be rated at at least 20 amps and mounted on a heatsink. Take all the necessary precautions to protect the heatsink and make sure any live parts are shrouded and insulated. The power supply will then send voltage in one direction only to the battery. Allow up to 0.6v drop across the diode when charging at a high rate. Caution: unfused DC voltages from batteries are very dangerous and any short circuits could cause a fire. Take care.
