Near elite level SQL comes at a cost
Speaking relatively, when it comes to 12" subwoofers and SQL, this one is right there with those representing other brands whose names have become synonymous with sound quality in the car audio world: Infinity, JBL, Polk Audio, MB Quart. There's no need to spend a lot more time raving about the sub's attributes - if naming off those other brands didn't tell you everything you need to know about what you can expect in terms of sound quality, then you don't care enough about car audio to even be reading this. This subwoofer does, however, have a feature that puts it in a class by itself - a low end frequency response level of 45Hz. That's as high as I can readily recall ever seeing for any reputable brand in the car audio industry for a 12 inch subwoofer. Immediately upon seeing it listed on the spec sheet I thought it was either a sneaky way to skirt distortion or a very logical design component - you know, if you can't really make a subwoofer that reproduces ultra low frequency sound waves effectively, just take those frequencies out of the equation altogether. Makes sense. However, if you're one of those people that doesn't mind feeling a sound wave in your chest as much or more than hearing it, just be aware that the subsonic portion of the audio spectrum you cherish just isn't there. That being said, this sub produces exceptionally clean and distinct low end notes, and it transitions one note to the next as cleanly and as seamlessly as you're gonna find. It is quite impressive in that respect. If you're asking yourself why this sub is so power hungry if it never has to attempt to produce the frequencies that require the most power, the answer is that it's used to stop the movement of the subwoofer quickly to create those clean transitions from note to note. What this sub does, it does well. And the only knock I've found on it is something I'm not so sure is even a knock. I mean they do call the lower end of audio spectrum "sub-sonic" for a reason. Maybe I'm just one of the few that loves clean sounding audio yet still digs it when subs dig deep. Just be aware that in effect using this subwoofer is like having a sub-sonic filter set at 45Hz, just in a kinda permanent way.
