Fun read.
This book is just like the movie with some extra back story to the characters. A very fast read, fun, and exciting.

Books based on Indiana Jones films could make role of Naziism clearer
I thought Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark was quite faithful to the movie script all along. I thought I recognized a lot of lines in the book as coming from the movie. In a scene near the end of the film several young Nazis beg off from participating in the project because,as they say, they are "uncomfortable with the thought of this Jewish ritual." I was glad the book included that scene, lest we forget. But I didn't think either the movie or the book explained Hitler's own interest in "this Jewish ritual" well enough. Was Hitler (one imagines) hoping to turn the Ten Commandments on their heads to thus endorse Naziism? This would have taken some additional and very ambitious "reeducation" of German youth. Or did Hitler simply want to capture Judaism's famous Tablets of the Law as a symbol of the "Synagogue Defeated"--a fairly common theme of cathedral art in Europe, not unlike the Temple Menorah which may still lie buried in the bed of the Tiber River. I was also curious to see how Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in book form would deal with the Nazi angle. At the end of the movie, when Else loses her life while trying to clutch the Holy Grail, Indy says,"Else didn't really believe in the Grail." I didn't find that line in the book, but the author's description of Elsa "cuddling the Grail like a child with a stuffed animal" gets the point across well, too. When I was a high school sophomore, our English teacher, a Mr. Donald Oleson, had our class read "On the Waterfront," by Bud Schulberg. Mr. Oleson touted this as a great thing-- that the producer of a film that already had been a box office success, should find himself dissatisfied with the film artistically, and take the trouble to write a book on the same subject that would bring out the "message" of the movie better. Since that time, during the late '60s, I think there has been a trend to follow movies with hopefully better books. I applaud that, too, as art for art's sake. David Bittner

Incredible Narration by a brilliant radio actor
Okay, Okay. It's Indiana Jones. You know what you're going to get. It's good, non-stop action. But what makes this set is the narration. For the 2 cassette, 3 hour adventure Dove Audio hired William Conrad to do the reading.Few are more qualified, for it was Conrad who gave voice to the CBS Radio program, ESCAPE, in the 1950's. It was he who told the terror-filled tale of three men in a lighthouse (3 Skeleton Key) that was literally being devoured by a seething, snarling mass of rats bigger than a football field and thicker than the schooner from which they swarmed. It was the late Mr. Conrad who gave booming voice to the fabled Marshall Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke. The program was heard on CBS radio long before it went to TV. Conrad's take on Dillon makes the Marshall much more human than the cardboard figure he was on television. When the show went to TV, Conrad wanted to go with it....but they did not want a FAT MATT. I guess Mr. Conrad got the last laugh years later when he did his Jake and the Fat Man show on the tube. He also had the highly rated Cannon show.Conrad's voice was golden and will be missed. among radio people his stock was on the highest shelf, a niche reserved for him and a select few others. Orson Welles comes to mind. and that's about it.Five stars of five...William Russo 17 nov 2007

Fabulous Book! Wondefully Written!!
This book was superbly written with great descriptive content. Extra story content which did not appear in the movie gelled wonderfully with the whole tale. Rob Macgregor is a great writer! He also wrote some further original Indiana Jones novels. He is such an acclaimed writer. It was such an entertaining and riveting read.
