Each piece is custom made from burlap, a jute material that has numerous imperfections. The flaws may be a missing tread, a tiny hole, a wrinkle or a dark or light spot . . . everyone is different. They are left in the sculpture to represent the wounds Jesus suffered from His severe beatings and to remind us of our own imperfections and sins that Christ took upon Himself when He died on the cross so that we may have everlasting life. The Artisans are trained by Scott Warden, who was inspired to create the Jesus sculptures in 1996. They are recruited from transitional living homes where they are in recovery from drugs, alcohol, abuse or other life circumstances. Over 80% of all the net proceeds help Canning Hunger feed the under-privileged in America while supporting the Artisans during their journey to recovery, restoration, dignity and self reliance. Canning Hunger's mission is to motivate, recruit, train, equip and deploy caring individuals into the fight against hunger. Over 200,000 volunteers in 50 states have provided over 50,000,000 meals for hungry kids and their families. We partner with thousands of national and local agencies, shelters, food pantries and major distribution agencies like the Salvation Army and Feed America, that specialize in getting food to those that need it the most.
