LEGENDARY 1970 RADIO SESSION - PLUS BONUS TRACKS INCL. RARE 25 MINUTE INTERVIEW WITH DUANE ALLMAN Broadcast live from the studios of WBCN FM, in Boston on November 21st, 1970, this three man off-the-cuff session came about by accident. The Grateful Dead had a gig at Sargent s Gym, on the University Campus in Boston, later in the day - which, in parentheses, was the first show at which Ned Lagin sat in with The Dead. Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir dropped by the local FM station for a chat in the morning. The Allman Brothers meanwhile were playing the Boston Tea Party across town. Duane Allman had a similar idea, and popped in too. Together they played a little live, acoustic music over the air, and had a right good natter while about it. The results of this rare but legendary recording can be heard on this CD for the first time. The sound isn t pristine but the music is superb and everyone seems to be having a good time. Listeners will too. Deadheads won t be surprised to find Garcia and Co. starting the show with Marty Robbins El Paso - a song the Dead had practically called their own since 1969. The country flavor continued with versions of Johnny Cash s Big River , and Porter Wagoner s Let Me In ends the session. In-between there are delightful versions of a few Dead standards (albeit all covers) and a classy Ragtime Workout on which Garcia really illustrates just what a superb acoustic fingerpicker he always was. He impresses again on the version played of British folk-blues guitarist Davey Graham s Angie - an instrumental so difficult to perform, few players would take the chance of attempting the number during a spontaneous session - Garcia plays the piece perfectly without a bum note to be heard! This all too short set (running at just 30 minutes) however is augmented on this disc with one of the most fascinating, fluid and relaxed interviews Duane Allman ever gave. The Duane Allman Radio Hour was, unlike the Boston session, very much a pre-planned event, which was initially supposed to be an interview/live music session with Duane playing solo. However, he forgot his guitar unfortunately, and so between the chat, album versions of a number of Allman tracks were played (including perhaps his best known performance, on Derek & The Dominos Layla ). So while we don t have what would certainly have been a magnificent solo show, we do have the quite extraordinary interview itself - which gives this CD a much more respectable 55 minute playing time in total.

Boston Rip-off
If Duane Allman played on one track, I couldn't identify it. Duane turned up at WBCN without his guitar. The recordings of Weir and Garcia are very poor quality. The interview with Allman is interesting and quite well recorded, but the marketing for this album approaches fraudulent misrepresentation (note that the blurb does not actually claim that Duane plays on any of the tunes, even if it implies he does).

Don't waste your money
This an extremely poor quality recording. I used to make better bootlegs on my portable Sony cassette stereo recorder back in19727

Was a little disappointed with the sound quality and the fact that Duane (because he forgot his guitar) is only on 1 track. The interview with Duane was really nice

Save your money !!!
Terrible Recording !!! Sounds like it was recorded on a hand held recorder !! The only part that sounds like an FM recording is the last part which is the interview of Duane !! Buyer Beware !!! BE AWARE !!!

Five Stars
Great to here their voices again, informative and fun to listen again to the great era of rock music.

Duane Allman does not play guitar here.
Pretty cool for a complete Deadhead but not good to listen to for audio quality or anything. It could probably benefit from just being used as bonus tracks on Workingman's Dead.

AWFUL AWFUL SOUND
avoid this nonsence. sound quality terrible incoherent mumblings which are unregonisable as to whom is singing here. warning this is exactly the same recording as the new England jam cd and of same quality. a lot of radio broadcasts being released recently and am of the opinion very few are worth buying. This sounds as if its been recorded about 2 miles away in a caravan with a heater on. don't waste your money on this rubbish.

Historically important but not the place to start
This is another of those lovely historical Radio Shows that has met the grey market of late. They have been hit and Miss in terms of sound quality, This one is Miss being very much an off air recording. The playing is fun as you would expect with those that are playing 3 great improvisers, but heck you have to cut through the wind noise, the vocals are so far back to be almost inaudible at times. The 25 minute Duane Allman interview is much better sounding that the 30 minutes of music.Historically important but not the place to start for either Allman fans or grateful Dead fans, file under for completest's only.

Concert Shocking: Interview Fascinating
I purchased this version with the interview as I was interested in hearing what Duane Allman had to say, and am I glad that I did as I found that section of the CD fascinating and worthwhile. His views on jazz very much align with mine. However the concerts section of the disc is quite honestly one of the most shocking commercial releases I have ever heard, and ranks along with the poorest quality boots, which is a real shame for such an historic performance!!!Had this been the 30 min concert only then this would only be one star, but the interview does rescue it to some extent, and of course Duane was taken from us far too soon.Overall I reckon though that this album is for ardent fans or completests only.Packaging is a standard plastic box.
