Thank You Amazon, this Book's a Gem.
I was alone and lost in my favourite Italian Cafe reading. It was late spring and I'd just received a copy of 'The Lady with the little dog'. On a table nearby sat a handsome woman accompanied by a little white dog. My book was noticed by the lady to which came a remark " I've never read Chekhov". "Come to think of it...neither have I". -and we both laughed.

Fascinating view of life in early Russia
I had never read any book by Chekhov before so this was quite an experience. His writing is shall we say unique. They are short stories and would thoroughly recommend. Fascinating read.

Check this out
I've always loved Chekov's dramas. The short stories were only partly known by me, as they randomly got included in anthologies, but this collection gives us the finest short stories all together, and they do not disappoint. To read this cover to cover might be inadvisable; the range is large, the emotions intense. But taken singly these stories are utterly enjoyable.

I liked this. The stories are short and amusing and life never changes. The shortness means they lack the artificial long drawn out tediousness of most books.

Poor print
I was not impressed with the print of this book, The typeface is too small, the pages are too large and the cover is made from paper so thin it might as well serves as a page in the book.

Misery in Russia
These are a number of short stories set in Russia- they describe the Russian peasant as dirty, lazy, dishonest and drunk. There are some interesting themes on love (requited & unrequited), but the writing is curiously uninvolving- and because of this I found it hard to care for any of the characters, even the more pleasant ones. I did not find reading this book an uplifting experience

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov is a wonderful Russian writer
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov is a wonderful Russian writer. His stories tell us about life of usual people with all their good and bad moments. But this book is not for everybody. Probably modern readers who like thrillers or soap operas won't like it.

Five Stars
Typical of Chekhov. Simple stories with tone of gloom which takes you to 19th century Russia.

Very sloppily edited.
Very poorly edited. Chapter headings on last line of previous page. Footnotes scattered within the text. A not very inviting way to encourage people to read books.Otherwise, the translation isn't too bad.
