50 years on ... and 2 generations overdue
50 years on ....Now in my early 60's, I enjoyed reading the long-overdue English translation of this book immensely, having read it some 50 yrs ago in Dutch. Perhaps not quite as much edge-of-your-seat stuff as I remember it, but that's not surprising as it is a book aimed at children after all. My (English-speaking) daughter enjoyed it equally and is now looking forward to reading it to her young son who will soon be old enough to read it himself. A truly timeless story in every sense. A brilliant book for younger readers and grandparents alike!I particularly like the framing of the book which uses the topography of the journey to help visualise the story, bringing it to life. It breaks the (long) story into 3-dimensional chapters which, I guess, help to make it so memorable and easily accessible for younger readers. In my view, the translation by Laura Watkinson into English is flawless and at no time was I reminded that the book's original text wasn't written in English. I look forward to the next translation of one of Tonke Dragt's books!

Great read. As is the sequel.
There is not much connection between the TV series and the book other than the bare bones of the plot, but the book surpassed the TV show in every way. (I enjoyed the TV show- it was kind of forgettable, and I will watch the sequel if they do one - but it was fine). But the book is great. No magic, no prophecies, far less blood and death, the book has less spectacle. It is a simpler story of a young man who has to traverse a great distance while being pursued. It is a story of friendship. It is a story of trying to do the right thing even if it seems to others like the wrong thing. It is a story of kindness and the power of looking for good in people and how that affects the course of events. The flap of the butterfly's wings and the fate of the kingdoms sort of theme.I also recommend the sequel Secrets of the Wild Wood - it is hard to imagine reading the first without reading the second as it is truly a continuation and a culmination of everything in the first book. I stayed up far too late on many nights reading both these books. Truly worth the read if you like a good adventure without the ugliness of many other books. It is a classic from another era.
