Feels cheap but it works and does the job.
I don't mind it, you do have to sharpen it a bit out the box and it is very sharp still so avoid cutting yourself. It does the job and for the price it does decent work. I don't like the feel of the handle as it feels like the flattened portion of the handle isn't inline with the blade. But I am assuming they did that on purpose because it is suppose to help if you are left or right handed. But it only makes it feel cheap like it was rush built and they just slapped the blade in without checking if it was straight. It is oddly light which also doesn't help it feel that great and sadly if the blade isn't sharp enough means you have to push and could damage the leather in the skiving process which is really bad so practice with it before using it on any project. Also sharpen it I used my kitchen knife water stone as you need it to be really really sharp so you are not fighting your tools to get the job done. I use a Doldokki Skiving knife which is really stupid expensive and this skiving knife doesn't come close but for the price it still does a decent job and I like to use it for evening edges and occasionally to cut out leather and I don't have to worry about if it breaks or dulls fast since its cheap I can just toss it and buy another.

Works well
Mine arrived sharp enough to skive right away. However, there was a very small chip on the edge, and like any production knife, it needs some sharpening and polishing before it’ll do what you ask it to with ease. Easy to sharpen, but not too easy, it seems like decent stainless steel. For the price, I think it’s probably the best of its kind. Japanese skiving knives are usually 50$-300$. For under 10$ this is a five star tool

Perfect blade; handle is a bit unhelpful
This thing is seriously sharp; I find it effective at precisely severing leather from 2 - 8 thickness (chop carefully, and be patient). The handle is a bit slick for my comfort. I wouldn’t say ‘no’ to some kind of guard (I get squeamish when I bleed on a project - #dainty) and mayhaps some leather on the grip.(yes, I read the description - it was clear. I just mislike the polished soft wood grip. My review, go write your own)Balance for the work is good, and the blade strength is beuno so far. Kinda dig this thing.

As purchased through BAYVAN shop!
This leather crafting tool arrived with typical Amazon speedy delivery. As shipped from BAYVAN store, with Prime delivery, it arrived in perfect condition and with a much better working edge than I expected. As it came, 14-16 ounce skirting was not an issue and it cut efficiently and smoothly, and did a great job skiving as well. I also trimmed multiple layers, to include two 12 ounce, and a 9 ounce went on a knife sheath. It made quick and very smooth work with much less effort than I normally experience. It arrived with a flawless mirror surface, and over the last two days of heavy cutting, along with sharpening, it did not scratch or wear excessively. I refined the factory edge, and finished it out to #12,000 grit finish, followed by stropping. I cut very thick and armored leathers, including exotic to include hippo, elephant and shark. All were effortlessly and smoothly cut, and the edge retention was better than I expected. Shark can be hard on edges, but this knife performed well. I consider it a great purchase, and the service received from BAYVAN was absolutely fantastic! Considering the price, the quality was superior than anything I had anticipated, and I would highly recommend it to anyone needing a skiving or even trimming knife. Despite the hard two days spent , and despite the use in abrasive exotic leathers, the knife still retails a nicely polished surface. Thank you BAYVAN, for getting me the ideal needed tools!

For the money, the would buy it again.
The quality of the steel is about as good as expected, maybe a bit better than the price would indicate. It will, and does sharpen up. So far it holds an edge, well enough. I was hoping for better. I would buy this tool again if i needed a useable option, and didnt have other options available. A beginner who is able tut o sharpen and maintain a blade will do well with this tool.

Great if you're good at sharpening and maintaining
The tool is fine but the steel is very cheap. You get what you pay for. I ordered it because I have the skill to maintain a sharp edge and I wanted a skiving knife I could beat the crap out of. You need to sharpen and strop it OFTEN to keep it in a useful condition but it gets the job done as a beater.

Super Sharp Knife that works surprisingly well
Love this cheap knife. If you go to many of the serious leather retailers you'll see skiving knives for 200 dollars. Please check this out first, it came extremely sharp and, as leather crafters, we all need to be stropping our blades to maintain the sharp edge. Maybe someday I will upgrade to a fancy knife or a skiving machine but I think that will be many years into the future as I thoroughly enjoy using this knife to get the job done. Good luck crafters!

Best. Skiver. Ever.
Skiving is the one thing about working with leather that I strongly dislike. I hate it so much that I've tried just about every possible type of skiving knife/blade in an effort to find one that will make the process even a little more bearable. This knife succeeds. The blade is crazy sharp and the wooden handle feels good in my hand. It has reduced the amount of time it takes me to perform this task by about 2/3. And for the first time tonight, it occurred to me as I was using the knife that I went into the skiving process without feeling annoyed, which is what prompted me to write this review. My only quibble is that it doesn't come with a cover for the blade for when the knife isn't in use. Not enough of an issue for me to take my rating down a star though.
