Judging where to make the hole
I used this for making holes in a card to place a brooch that we are making. After a few goes I got the hang of it but it would help to have some sort of guage to see exactly where the hole will be punched.

Annoying: paper gets stuck
Whenever I punch holes in more than 10ish pages, the cut paper gets stuck inside the puncher. So I have to grab a pencil or something thing, to remove the pieces of paper... Often resulting in confetti on my table...It gets through paper very well, but the usage is very annoying. I would not buy it again.

Good sturdy METRIC SIZED punch
This is a heavy duty punch. There is a slot on the side you can use to eyeball the location from the edge. It will easily punch thru a stack of paper 1/8" thick. With more force it punched a hole thru 1/16" thick acetal, which is a moderately hard plastic. So it works ok on plastic and I'd say 1/16" thick is about the maximum, but don't know how long it will stand up on 1/16" material. I didn't try on fabric but my guess is you will get very mixed results. Get an anvil type punch for fabric. It is metric punch so the hole size is 6mm(.236") not 1/4"(.250"). It will punch a maximum of 25mm(.984") from the edge of the paper. If you MUST have a 1/4" hole this is not the punch for you. If you just need to punch for a binder then this will work great!
