Fit perfectly on Dewalt sander
I don't know why users are complaining about this adapter. I bought a new Dewalt ROS and then purchased this adapter, and it fits perfectly, and locks into place. It's engineered very nicely.

Dewalt lack of ability to connect a shop vac to tools is ludicrous
I honestly can’t believe they did this by accident. How does such a high rated tool company drop a ball this significant? So, you bought a Dewalt shop vac huh? You think it should connect to your Dewalt tools don’t ya? Well, it doesn’t! Firstly, you need this adapter, but that’s not all folks, you also need other adapters to get it to connect, I ended up getting a set of ambiguous adapters with no name, and it took two of those plus this to connect to a Dewalt saw. You think I’m crazy, google it, you will find dozens of stories just like mine. But most gave up, and purchased Dewalt a dust extractor, which I believe is exactly why they did this. If they offer adapters that work, nobody will buy the dust extractor. Thing is most of us use these tools minimally, we don’t need a full sized extractor. SMh, you let me down Dewalt, wow just…..wow.

Finally
So I finally found this item for my 5 inch orbital sander. It locks on and fits on to standard Rigid hose.

Easy to use
Put this on my mitre saw. Works great for hooking up to my shop vac.

Well built, but difficult to attach to a standard US shop vac without buying extra parts
So the adapter is pretty well built, and does go on properly to my DeWalt random orbit sander. The problem is connecting it to something else...in this case, a Home Depot Ridgid shop vac with a 2.5" hose. Even the Ridgid Home Depot Hose and Accessory Adapter Kit did not work with this dust extractor adapter....well, not entirely. I had to buy a plumbing part, a "PlumbQwik" 1.5" to 1.5" adapter, remove the band from one side, and put one side into the dust extractor adapter, one side into a Ridgid 2.5" hose coupler (which fit just perfectly, lucky me), to make all this work...which it now does. Still, wish they made a version of this that just attached to a shop vac without all the "extras".Followup to the above...my "adapter rig" didn't work...given I could not find an adapter to work with the standard Ridgid shop vac anywhere, I decided to return this. I've no complaints about the build quality of this particular item...but be sure you have a way to attach it to your particular hose before you buy.

Shopvac adapters gone wild!!!
I have a DeWalt DWS779 Sliding Compound Miter Saw. I needed to connect it to my Rigid hose (premium car cleaning accessory kit). This was one piece in the puzzle. From saw to hose, these are the pieces that worked for me:DWS779 -->DWV9000 -->DWV9190 -->Rockler 1_1/4 to 2_1/4 adapter 33175 26967 -->Rigid VT2534 hose3 adapters to get to the hose! LOL. It works.

Overpriced, dumb design, but easily fixed.
Like other reviewers I was frustrated because out of the package this doesn't work. It fits onto my palm sander perfectly since it has the same connection as my dust bag but the other end was the exact same diameter as my shop vac meaning I'd need yet another adapter and at this price it was getting expensive. Instead I just boiled some water and stuck the vacuum side of this adapter into it and that softened the plastic enough that I could fit it on my vacuum hose and let it cool to keep it's shape. I haven't turned any of it on yet to test it but it is snug as a bug in a rug.
